Just wondering if anyone out there with IBS has experienced shortness of breath.  I have some of the symptoms of IBS but not all...and some symptoms I have seem to be related the GERD as well.

The most prominent symptom I have is feeling very full and bloated, even when I have not eaten much to the point where it feels like my abdomen is so swollen, that it is inhibiting my abiility to breath easy.  It really doesn't feel like it is asthma or lung related.  Eliminating coca cola from my diet and taking over the counter antacids has reduced the heartburn...but the persistent bloating still remains. It gets real bad and sometimes, I have difficulty swallowing food, meaning it feels like it gets stuck in my esophagus and takes forever to go down.  Anyone else get it this bad?

Thanks in advance,
Ed

Yes, I do when I have too much gas. Best thing you did was eliminate cola and all soft drinks. The three things that cause gas in the stomach are carbonation, swallowing air and acid. It sounds like you are having an acid problem. I get it very bad and know what the "stuck in throat" feels like. Not nice and can affect breathing though actually when I check the oxygen levels they are OK. It just feels like i can't breathe. I find that either Pepto or Malaax Complete helps or anything with Simithicone in it like Gas X Some people like Mylanta better. Does it feel better when you belch? Does that relieve some symptoms. Tums and Rolaids will work but do have a rebound effect so it is a temporary fix. You should check this out with a Dr. as that can be damaging the esophagous over time and cause a serious problem.

Yeah, I am headed to the docs to check it out.  I have tried some antacids and also Phayzyme, which is suppose to elimate excess gas.  Sometimes it seems to help, and other times it doesn't.

There for a while the acid and heartburn were terrible, but since the drop off of soda, it has gotten better, but I definitely want to get it checked out to see if there is damage.  But the constnat full feeling is really bothersome, so hopefully they can do something to help.

Thanks for the response and the information canyonbabe.

I have had to live with this most my life but as I age it has gotten worse. Phazyme is very good especially if you take immediately after eating. If you could see my medicine cabinet you would know that I have tried everything. When all else fails I take a Dulcolax laxative(just one) even if I am not constipated because it seems to get the gas moving without any other things happening. My problem is keeping things moving thru my system. Do stay away from the carbonated stuff though. Good luck.
