Ok I am a 30 year old female.  4 weeks ago today I had my appendix taken out.  The pathology report came back that my appendix was severely infected, rather than acute appendicitis.  One week and 2 days after surgery I started having bad abdominal pain again and running a lowgrade fever.  I went back to my surgeon and told him the pain was a sharp burning sensation in the middle of my chest and it radiated to my back.  While I am hurting on the right side the real pain seems to go over under my left ribs.  He did blood work and an ultrasound on my gall bladder which came back Ok.  So he ordered a HIDA Scan which also came back normal.  The problem is I am in almost constant pain.  It eases if I do not eat or just eat Jello or Poptarts. (I know that sounds crazy).  And anytime I eat a normal meal I get nauseas and either have immediate diarhea or within several hours of eating.  They presribed Protonix, but that doesnot seem to be helping.  I went back to My GP on Monday and he has scheduled a endoscopy thinking I might have a stomach ulcer.  But he also suspected my gall bladder until he read the reports on the tests that my surgeon did.  And still thinks there is a chance it could be my gall blader.  I am very nervous that they will do this test tomorrow and still not find anything.  I am sick of being sick.  And the pain never seems to end like I said unless I just aviod food.  I know this is a ong post I just want to see if anyone else is having these problems or something like them?  also both of my grandmothers had there gall bladders out.  One due to stones, the other because it was non functioning.  Any help or idea on what is going on with me would be appreciated.  And I apologize if there are any typos or misspellings.

Blondie, see my reply to your post on another thread. That you had an infected appendix makes you look a lot like my mother, who had an infected gall bladder--the infection was not cleared up before they did surgery and it caused the infection to spread. That can cause a LOT of pain and other problems.

Thanks for you post!  It is frustrating to not know what is going on and have the dr.s be puzzled as well.  My GP said there was a chance it could be IBS.  Did you have any symptoms like mine?

I saw your post and thanks!!  All my bloodwork showed there was no infection, so I think I am Ok in that dept.  I know what you mean about antibiotics wrecking your stomach, but I finished them 11 days ago.  Do you think it would stil be causing probs?  I go in for the endoscopy tomorrow, if they find nothing I will try what you recommended thanks for your help!!! cool

Absolutely!  One, antibiotics can stay in your system for a couple of days, maybe more (depends on the antibiotic).  Two, antibiotics give you problems by killing off most of your bacteria.  It can take weeks for that bacteria to breed back up to normal levels--in the meantime, you are not functioning normally.  Or, worse, you get a bad bacteria in there when it's nice and vacant and it breeds rapidly and takes over.  I've absolutely had bowel problems up to 3 weeks after stopping antibiotics (and I've never been on two at once).

I really think you should try some probiotics.  They won't hurt you and they may help.  I can't take antibiotics without them now.

It can take weeks before you have problems with antibiotics. If the probiotics don't work perhaps a stool sample should be done.
