Oh Mine is a long story!! But I will chop it as much as I can!

My name is Robin. I am 29 yrs (almost). I was diagnosed with IBS about 8 years ago. But over the past year and a half I quit eating gluten (we found out that all our children had Celiac Disease). But my test came back negative. But while on a GF diet I feel somewhat better. Well LOTS better. I was recently tested again for ALL food allergies. Everything came back negative. But when I eat gluten and other various foods my tongue swells, I get the bid D, greasy bowel movements, bloated, nausea, irritable, cramps, and the list could go on.

Is it possible this is all just the IBS?? Anyone else have any of this stuff. The tongue thing is what gets me. It swells and gets these like welts on it. It is most uncomforable!!

Thanks!
Robin

If it looks like a duck and acts like a duck, at the very least it should be treated like it's a duck, especially if the only way to make it go away is with a gluten-free diet! I find it quite suspicious that all of your children have celiac disease and you do not (unless your husband has it). What "test" for celiac did you have? Did you have an actual biopsy of the intestine? That's the only true way to go...sure sounds like some sort of gluten intolerance to me...

are you normal on a GF diet? I know that some people with other bowel disorders(like IBD) also do well on GF diets even when they are not tested as allergic. I think there is a difference between having allergy's and being intolerant of a food. So even if you are intolerant to guten or latose then it can make you miserable.

I had the blood tests and the genetic blood testing. SInce I am pregnant they haven't been able to do the biopsy as of yet.

I was thinking the same thing though! Even if I am not allergic, then maybe I am intollerant.

Food allergy tests are not terribly accurate. I think that false positives are low, but false negatives are high. Also, as you and Sarita have mentioned, an intolerance isn't the same thing, medically, as an allergy--but it sure can feel the same! I have such a TERRIBLE reaction to sugar alcohols, I've just started telling people that I'm allergic to them to keep from getting them in medicine or food. I am probably not physically allergic to them, but the intolerance is unbearable.

If it makes you feel better, by all means live gluten free!

I might be mistaken but I do think a biopsy is the best way to tell if you have celiac disease. The little "finger-like" projections in the intestine would blunted and shortened when they are examined under a microscope and this is a tell-tale sign.
