I have been put on Elavil at 10mg per day for my IBS, first off I have IBS-C so I dont know why they put me on elavil because I know one of the side effects is constipation, but Im also an insomniac and since being on elavil I have been able to sleep for 8 hours which is fantastic since that hasnt happened in years. Here is my issue, even at that low dose, my sex drive is gone. I had a pretty high sex drive before and now it is non existent and I also can no longer orgasm or it is very difficult to do so. Has anyone had this problem with Elavil? should I look for an alternative?

I use to be very sexual with my husband but, over the past 10 years it has gone POOF!!!!  This is awful.  I have intercourse with my husband for his health.  LOL   I take a number of medications and I think that is the problem.  Good Luck on your luck with your medicine.  If you find any answers please, please let me know ASAP.  I take an anti-depressant generic for Prozac. >>>>medicines skull

Red, I know nothing about the libido and for me it doesn't matter but I am interested in the fact that it is letting you sleep. I am an insomniac also and my Doctor and I discussed Elavil but then when I mentioned something else that dryed me out he said Elavil would dry me out also. Do you find that you mouth and eyes are dry. I am now taking Lunesta or some nights Xanax but  Idon't like the way it makes me feel. I don't need an antidepressant but then I guess it couldn't hurt as that doesn't sound like a very strong dosage. Do you take it at night?

Sorry about the libido part. Did you look up side effects or read the paper to see if this is a known side effect. You can always go on

Askapatient.com and see what others are saying about most drugs.

I do take it at night, Ive been on it now since I think april. I talked to my doctor today and he agrees that elavil is not the right one for me since it is making the constipation worse and no one wants to lose their sex drive so he put me on trazodone. I start tomorrow. So it should still help with my sleep and one of the side effects is an increase in sex drive. So hopefully by the time my husband gets back from deployment it wont be a chore and it will be something I want. Itell you how the trazodone works out for IBS and my insomnia

Trazadone sent me into outer space and I was only on 50mg. I was like on a bad trip, very spacy feeling. I hope it works for you .I have 2 friends that love it and 2 that couldn't take it either. Perhaps just having him home and safe will take the pressure off and you can relax.
