I usually get a bad case of IBS after taking antibiotics.  I just found out i have pneumonia, and I'm on a STRONG new antibiotic called Factive 5.   sad    Does anyone have a good way to head off the damage of antibiotics on the GI tract?  yeah

I suggest taking good probiotics along with the anti's. I understand you must wait at least 2 hours after your dose of anti's before you take the pro. Not all probiotics are the same. Invest wisely and get good ones.

Even while not on antibiotics it can do IBS good to take a good probiotic daily and indefinitely...same with fibre daily as well.

Kim and pb4 thank you for replying.  What is a good brand or type of probiotics?  I want to get something good.  Also I don't know when the best time to take these are and how many per day?

I have sucess with primadophilus reuteri made by natures way, they have powdered or pill form, I use the pill, much easier than the powdered version...it has guaranteed intestinal release, aids with high cholesterol, lactose intolerance issues (both of which I had) and for women, vaginal health (haven't had a yeast infection since and I used to be quite prone to them).

Only one/day is needed and it's affordable, in Canada I pay 29.00 for 90 caps which lasts me 90 days, reason why it's affordable...the only downside to them is they must be kept cold (bought in the fridge at the store and kept in the fridge at home) or they lose a bit of their potency.

I use it to aid my crohn's and my IBS.

I take a probiotic called Floragen3.  It's hard to find - my GI special orders it at a few local mom-and-pop pharmacies.  It's expensive, too.  But it's what he "strongly recommends."  I don't know how it compares to the other biggies, though.  I know a lot of people online and IRL who like just plain old acidopholus for maintenance, even on abx.

Good luck!

Nature's Way and Culturelle have been popular on the board. I take VSL#3, which is a godsend...I order it online. Somewhat pricey but incredibly effective.

Um...I'm a moderator and don't even know the answer to that question! I would just google VSL3 and that should work :)
