Just found this forum and I am hopeful that I may get some help that I am thus far not getting from my doctor.  I hope my details wont be too gross for anyone but this is the only way I feel that I can truly get the intensity of my problem across.
I have been diagnosed with IBS.  I have had a colonoscopy done and the doctor actually found nothing wrong, which is good.  Here is what I have been dealing with and I am just beginning a third medication since the first two haven't helped.
Anytime I do anything that is new to me or even not so new to me, like flying or cruising, I get uncontrollable diahrrea.  Flying doesn't really make me nervous and neither does cruising but obviously there is an underlying anxiety there that I seem to be unaware of, ie.  missing my flight due to long lines through security, having diahrrea hit me because it has sooo many times before.  To give you a better idea.  When we arrived at the airport in London after our cruise, I had to go to the bathroom 17 times. shocked   Imodium did nothing for me either.  This is how it started......during the twelve day cruise I probably had a BM four times total. (I'm not regular when it comes to BM's).  We were dropped off by the tour bus at Heathrow airport.  The minute I stood up, the diahrrea hit.  And I mean hit uncontrollably.  I had to get inside the airport, drag my suitcase into the women's restroom and change clothes and clean myself up, which was no easy feat.  This was my first knowledge that I had this kind of a problem.  From that point on I spent the next several hours running back and forth to the restroom and barely making it I might add.  I went to the doctor when we returned home and found out about the IBS.  Just Sunday we returned from another cruise and experienced the same problem only this time I didn't have to go 17 times.  I had one pair of depends underwear just in case they were needed and they were after I soiled my clothes. This happened while we were trying to check our bags.  Of course I had to stop in the middle of the process to run to the bathroom and change clothes.  Then while I was waiting in the LONG line for customs.........you got it!!!!  It literally falls out of me an I cannot stop it.  Then, here I am stading there with this smell going on and embarrassed beyond belief because I HAVE to go through customs before I can board the plane.  Then, at this point I have no extra underwear.  Bless his heart my son understanding my situation whispered in my ear that he happened to have a pair of undies in his carry on bag.  Well, I finally get to the restroom to again begin the clean up process and of course this isn't my last trip to the ladies room.  This problem does sometimes happen when I am at home but most of the time it's when I am out of my comfort zone where there is a restroom in close proximity.  I have had it ocassionally hit while shopping at the mall, but most often it strikes when I am on my way to the doctors office, flying, cruising.  The doctor first put me on bentyl and that did nothing at all, then he put me on belladonna-phenobarbital.  Well, I thought the belladonna-phenobarbital was working until this past Sunday upon our return from our cruise.  Now he is going to try Donnatal.
Has anyone experienced what I am going through?  Trying to clean yourself up in the ladies restroom is almost impossible let alone having to throw my clothes away.  We have just cancelled our wedding anniversary cruise for this February because I am so afraid that this problem wont be cleared up by then and we all know that if you don't cancel by a certain time frame you loose your money.

Donnatel is belladonna and Pheno so I am not sure what is going to be different. I had a friend that had something similar and she helped her with just plain Metamucil. This same friend was on all those drugs before one Doctor suggested she try the Metamucil and it changed her life. I know fiber is difficult to handle sometimes but I do know it worked for her and she got her life back. She put it in 7 up every day.

Maybe I'll just go get some Metamucil and try it out.  At this point, I think I'm game for almost anything.  My opinion of the Donnotal is the same as yours since I have gone online and done some reading.

Thanks :-)

My suggestion would be to ask your doc about probiotics, fiber therapy, and calcium carbonate. All of these can have a "binding" effect and there are many other prescription medications that might be tried, such as Lomotil or Questran, that could help you through those rough moments!

I have taken calcium carbonate and citrate which bound me up all the time.  My only times of diahrrea are when I encounter anxiety episodes.  Since I don't have regular BM's as it is, I don't want to make that part worse. shakehead   I want to fix the problems that occur during periods of anxiety that I can't seem to control.  I'll look into the Lomotil or Questran.

Maybe you should look into getting some anxiety meds. I am gonna go in that direction.

I was going to suggest Xanax. I have diarrhea issues in the same circumstances as you. I finally admitted that I do have some travel anxiety, got the xanax and now have a LOT less diarrhea traveling. I take a very low dose and am not out of it at all. I also take one the night before I travel. I wake up feeling so much better.
27 Year old married female law student (last year!!). Diagnosed w/ CD 4 years ago, IBS for over 10 years before that, which was probably the CD. I am sort of lactose intollerant too but can handle anything cultured and do well w/ lactose pills and lactaid. For crohns I am currently on Pentasa 4 pills/4x day and hysociamine prn. I also have bad acid reflux and have been on PPI's since age 13. I have been through prilosec, prevacid, and nexium. Currently I am on Protonix in the morning and Zantac at night. I also take a birth control pill to allow some fun in my life.

My diagnosis has been "anxiety" also.  Weird though since flying doesn't really bother me.  Guess it's just the worry of missing a flight due to delay through security these days.  Lots of things for me trigger anxiety lately.  I'm going to a doctor that I used years ago for possibly Krohns (thank goodness it wasn't that) next week and he already has my test results from my recent doctor.  The one I'm going to next week is supposed to be the best in my area.  Only reason I didn't use him for the colonoscopy that I had back in May was that he didn't use the pills that you can take now.  Only the liquid stuff of which I can't drink.  I throw it up no matter how hard I try to keep it down.  He now uses the pills. :-)   His receptionist also told me that I would not have to have the colonoscopy done over, so that brought a huge smile to my face. smilewinkgrin
