OK so I havent been on here in a while but now I am in need of some advice. I have had loose stools for as long as I can remember, always worried if there is a bathroom around, things like that.I go probably 4-5 times a day, mostly in the morning. Now from my "self dagnosis" I chalked it up to IBS.I have been getting lomotil prescribed from my doctor for a few years now and it has been a god sent for me. I usually take 1 if i am planning on going out of to an event so I dont have to worry about anything and I can feel"normal". Lomotil is like a miricle for me. Now all of a sudden my Dr. wants me to go for a colonostopy which is fine,I would like to be sure there is nothing major going on also BUT she doesnt want to perscribe anymore lomotil unitl after the results which is still ok but I went to the Gastro. Dr yesterday to set up my appointment and he was saying that after the colonostopy he dont want me to take Lomotil anymore due to it can effect you colon when I get older, He may have said "It will thin your colon" and that he has another medication he will put me on as long as all looks normal, no chrons disease etc. 1st thing he told me was to go gt some benefiber but I had already been down that path and it didnt help. I have been taking Calcium caltrate daily and that seems to be helping but I just dont know what I am going to be able to do without Lomotil, it seems to be the only thing that let me live a "normal" life the past 4 years or so.  Any advice from anybody here would be appreciated!!!!

I don't know anything about that med, but I can chime in with a different fiber rec. I had problems with chronic, urgent diarrhea, and for a fiber supplement, I took Fibercon. It has a bulking agent, so it's a little different from other popular fiber supplements. I paired it with heavy probiotics, and I definitely noticed an improvement over time.

Good luck!

How about Benefiber?? The Dr. told me to get on that so I bought some today and I got the capsules instead of the powder but the capsules say take 3 pills 3 x's a day. Is that extreme or is that the dose I should start with and if anyone has any feedback on this product it would be great? Also the fibercon did that actually take away the looseness and the urgency to the point where you feel secure going out shopping and things without worring about finding a bathroom? Thanks again for anyones help...it is greatly appreciated!!

Yes, the reason my GI recommended Fibercon over something like Benefiber or Metamucil is because of the bulking agent in Fibercon. It bulked up my stools so they were no longer loose, which in turn (for me) meant they weren't as urgent. When my D was at its worst, I would often have to run for a restaurant's restroom before the bill was even paid. Now I rarely have to use a public bathroom at all, only if we're out all day. My stools are completely solid, and I generally only go once a day now.

At one point, I was taking four capsules of Fibercon every day. Two in the morning, and two in the evening.
