I have had stomach pains in my lower right quadrant since the beginning of January.  I have been to the OBGYN to rule out ovaries, etc., internist 4 times for pain, the GI doctor and even went to the ER, pain was so bad.  I have had pelvic ultrasound, abdominal scan and CT scan, all show normal.  Blood work and urine are normal.  I do have gerd.  Doctor changed the nexium to another med, to see if the abdominal pains would go away, the pains are worse, back on Nexium.  The pain is now also in my back around my waist.  I suffer with this every day just in varying degrees of pain.  I spoke to the GI today and he is saying IBS.  I do not have diarehha, am sometimes constipated and sometimes difficult to pass gas.  What do you guys think, could it be IBS?  Thanks.  I am at my wits end.

You didn't mention colonscopy or endoscopy. Definetly a must for both.

I have had colonoscopies and endoscopies in the past.  GI doctor says I am due for endoscopy in the summer and the colon not for two years.

Hi Do I know what you are going through!!!!! I have had this pain since November and had all the tests you mentioned. It feels like labor pains!!!! Every night I was awake between 130 and 330am with these pains and left to feel like someone had kicked my guts during the rest of the time. I have done alot of reading and I think I have IBS. I also have GERD . I too suffer from bad constipation. I bought something over the counter called Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It's a capsule you take daily and it is in the probiotic family. I also have been taking Digestive Enzymes with my meals. I am on Effexor 37.5 ongoing so this does help my guts to relax-not go into spasms so much. The down side of this med is constipation I'm sure. I also bought the books by Sherry Brescia on Irritable Bowel Syndrome which shows you a way to combine foods. It all makes sense because some foods are very acidic and this is not good for GERD. I'm doing all of this and am finally sleeping through the night and the gut muscle spasms have stopped. I'm still constipated, even with the increase in water and added fiber but I think it has to do with a lazy gut syndrome. I'm telling you that some doctors look at you and think you are crazy. Believe me , if I felt good I wouldn't be wasting my time in a doctors office. I also have found that exercise is helping also. I have started doing the treadmill again. It's hard when you have children, for I remember when the boys were young. I'm just sharing what I think is working for me. I hope you feel better soon .It's been a long four months for me and in reading about this syndrome, it will occur from time to time. It all depends on how well you take care of yourself. It's so hard, I know. Lots of good wishes your way. EM

Thanks for the information.  I did start, on my own, taking probiotics and it does seem to help.  I will have to go to Borders and buy the book you recommended.  I am finding that if I eat raw vegetables and fruit my stomach is worse.  Is the Effexor over the counter?  Doctor has me on 20 mg Bentyl with every meal but I can not function, I get dizzy and drowsy and just want to sleep.

Just got back from work and read your posting. You know, I can't tolerate raw vegetables and fruit that great either. For me I'm thinking it's because of my gallbladder being gone. I think the digestive enzymes are helping alot. You can get that over the counter. Cook all your veges, and eat fruit as tolerated. Bananas are good for IBS I guess. I don't overdue on fruits. I try to have a banana and some applesauce and diced peaches/pears. It's better than no fruit. I don't handle melons very well. As for the Effexor , It is a doctor prescribed med. It is in the anti-depressant family. At a low dose of 37.5 mg it's given more as treatment for panic/anxiety/CFS. For me 37.5 helps. The Bentyl, I understand works and I only took that 30 years ago after my gallbladder surgery. It was for muscle spasms. I remember not functioning that great while taking it. You have children to take care of so I'm sure it must be difficult with the side effects you are experiencing. If you can't find the book I talked about earlier, you can go to amazon.com and type in Sherry Brescia Great Taste No pain Manual . This lady suffered most of her life with IBS. It's amazing what she talks about. Hope all goes well with your search.
