Hey everyone I hope you all are well and staying strong one of my IBS symptoms that bother me is the urgency that I feel for every bm.I actually have an appointment next month to have a test done by a doctor that specializes in the pelvic area.I'm hoping by having this test they can pinpoint the reason for the urgency that I get.I was researching online for anything that may help for the urgency and I read somewhere that antispamodic medications may help,my question is are there any of you on antispamodic medications that help with the urgency if you experience it? I also read it helps with keeping away the cramping that you get with diharrea.I would love to read anyones experience with this I'm really thinking about asking my GI doctor if he would think it may help with the urgency if that test is normal. As always wishing you all good stomach and digestive health sending you all big hugs take care all. :-)

My belladonna did help with the urgency and cramping I would get. Usually within an hour of taking it( not as a preventive but after the guts have started their revolt) the pain would be dulled considerably if not gone completely. I've also used it as a preventive and found it to work well. I just have to be careful since I sometimes swing towards C. Nothing like taking one as a preventive and having it prevent any movement at all for three days.

Well I genrally take Lopamide or immodium. Yes the day I take Combiflam - an anti inflamatory analgesic preparation (consisting of Ibuprofen and Paracetamol), the urgency goes down and I don't have to wake up every half an hour during night, which otherwise I have to.

Hi. My name is lepontneuf and I have IBS. ;-) I've had it for three years and have had MRIs, colonoscopies, inflatable balloons inserted to test muscle tone - all showing no problems whatsoever - but I still cannot postpone bowel movements. I know there's a psychological/anxiety component to the whole thing, exacerbated by its continual cycle. It's not often diarrhea - I just have literally two minutes MAX to get my ass on a toilet, or it's completely over and I'm involved in some horrendously embarrassing clean-up operation hopefully not in a public restroom. My peristalsis is completely screwed up. When the hints of an urge to defecate come, things fast-forward to the very end, very quickly.

Not ONCE in the past three years has any of the ten doctors said the word Imodium to me.

Why, I don't know. Not going to judge medical establishment here. But everything I've recently stumbled upon in the IBS websites seem to indicate that Imodium has been the solution to their problem, the answer they've been looking for, that which has given them their lives back. Wow!

So since my attacks (as I like to call them) are usually in the morning, I have decided to take one Imodium every morning at the start of the day and see what happens. It's been fantastic so far, but it's only been three days. I know that loperamide (Imodium) is indeed an opioid and a degree of dependency can occur, as well as resistance to its effects, so I'm only taking 2mg - an extremely low dose. If I become dependent on it, I really don't care. If it means no more attacks, then I'd gladly take a chemical dependency (in the short term, while the constitutional cause is determined).

So, not taking ANY doctor's advice, I've done my own research and am treating myself. I encourage you to also take control of your health.

I have had Chronic Diarrhea for about a year now. No anti spasmatics or imodium, or lomotil has ever worked for me.What did work was Cholestyramine powder, and after 3-4 for days after taking the first dose my bms returned to a normal amount. Before that point I averaged 8-10 bms and sometimes going as high as 17- 22 bms in one day 22 being the highest I ever counted.

This link may help you sort out what medications you decide to take. http://www.helpforibs.com/books/1stIBS/prescriptions3.asp. You can also take a look at this link for natural remedies for your urgency. http://www.helpforibs.com/shop/suplmts/pmintcaps.asp.

I hope this helps!

yeah, I did. My spasms went into my mid/upper back. I took diarsoothe, and it calmed that and diarrhea down. takes a few hours depending on the severity of cramps/diarrhea. did learn to NOT drink coffee or have alcoholic beverages, though. learned through a doctor to not stimulate all that while on diarsoothe. it'll kick in, but take a good dose, like a cup for a couple of days. be better!
