I did a 2 day prep with Miralax, Magnesium Citrate and Bisacodyl and there was still stuff in me, so they weren't able to do the colonoscopy. The reason I was having the colonoscopy for severe constipation in the first place. Has this happened to anyone else? What prep might they prescribe for the next colonoscopy? I just want to get this over with and get on with some treatment that brings some relief. Any input would be appreciated

Well, I always have to take the Fleets Phospho soda which is fairly easy to do. You should be running clear liquid if it has cleaned you out. I was told that they can suction out bits and pieces if they need to as once I didn't think I was cleaned out enough but they said not to worry. Hopefully someone else will have a solution. That is discouraging. There must be an way of getting that out. I wonder if a CT scan would show anything.

Someone else on here has a similar problem with really bad constipation, and rather than starting the day before, which is normal, s/he goes on a liquid diet and laxatives TWO full days before the procedure.

Although, I don't know what they would see on one that would indicate why you have constipation. If you have a kink in your guts, that's going to be in your small intestines, as will a hernia. And slow movement won't show up on a scope. Seems like a bit of a waste of a procedure to me (unless you're already middle aged, at which point they want to do one on everyone as a baseline to compare to later in life); a better bet would seem to be something like a barium contrast or pill camera, where they can test how fast your gut functions (in the case of the camera, they can also see in there as it goes down). If it gets to a spot and stops, that would be a pretty good indication that you have a blockage or a kink. If it goes through, only really slowly, then you're working too slow.

I just had a colonoscopy done 2 weeks ago. Two days before I started eating very lightly..like soup, eggs etc. Then the day before I could only have liquids and I did the prep at five in the afternoon. It was called Moviprep and it was great. You mix it up into a 1 liter jug which the pharmacy gives you with the prep. Drink it down every 15 minutes. Then the next morning I had to get up early and do it again.

By the 4th or 5th time going it was totally clear. It wasn't hard on my stomach and I had no cramps or anything with it. This was the easiest one I have ever done. The doc said they only use Moviprep now cause it works so well..

Now that's a new I've never heard. My trouble is I get very nauseous. And as time goes on without solids in my system I get even more nauseous and develop a major headache as a result too. I'm usually a mess going into a colonsocopy!

I'll have to check into this Moviprep for my next test. It's not for 2 years and by then I'm hoping the orange flavored prep that's been approved in Canada gets approved down here in the US. But if it's not I'll remember this Moviprep.
Marsky/Mary's story.....
- Diagnosed with rectal cancer, April 1999 - Stage I, no treatment necessary
(5 hour colon resection: 90% sigmoid removed, 15 inches of colon removed, gall bladder removed, given temporary colostomy)
- Colostomy reversal, June 1999
- Left with IBS/D symptoms, multiple bm's every day
- On a low residue diet at least 75% of the time
- Takes Colace 50 mg each evening

All in all I do okay, I just use the bathroom A LOT! But I survived and beat cancer!

The moviprep isn't bad at all. It has a slight lemon-lime salty/sweet flavor. I had no problem drinking it especially because it was only one liter the first day and another 1 liter the second day. The doctor can give you a pill for nausea before hand if you need it. That would help...I didn't feel great the morning of the colonoscopy but mostly cause I was so thirsty..
