Hello, I am new to this site but I read your blogs and you sound so much like me.  I've been sick since July 2007.  In January of this year, I started seeing a Dr. in L.A. (4.5 hours from my home).  After a year and a half of several different doctors and tests, and an enormous amount of time, money and suffering, this new Dr. finally had an answer: Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth, or SIBO for short.  I took a simple breath test and it came back positive, the only test that ever came back positive.  Anyways, he has been treating me with antibiotics.  They have helped tremendously, however, the bacteria is not completely gone and I still have problems.  He is trying different combinations of antibiotics, pancreatic enzymes and natural remedies until we get the right combination.  I am hopeful that this won't be the rest of my life, but like you, I have days where I wonder and ask God to end it.  I just have to keep telling myself, I will be normal again, in His time. I have stopped losing weight since I've been seeing him, but I haven't gained any back yet.  My social life is pretty much non-existent.  I am happily married and we have two awesome kids, but we definetly don't get out much because of my problems and the financial strain this has caused.  Our plan is to go to Disneyland because we haven't been in so long, but like everything else, it will happen when "Mom gets better."  It's hard and I completely understand how you feel.  Just wanted to say, you are not alone.

I do have the SIBO test at home I still have not taken it yet but I feel that is my last hope and hoping it will come back positive I just want to take the test and get it over with I want to have some kind of normalsy in my gut. jt80,
What is a home SIBO test, and where can I get one?

MommaHolmz,
What antibiotic were you prescribed? I think Rifaximin/Xixifan is supposed to be the best, but neomycin is good too. They're not absorbed into the bloodstream, but stay in the digestive tract so they have great effect with little side effect.

Hi Chester it's a test kit with glass tubes your supposed to give breath samples after drinking a concocktion in water it's supposed to find bad bacteria in your small intestine.SIOB stands for small intestine bacterial overgrowth test I have not been given any antibiotics yet but was given them back in 02 when I was attacked by five different types of bacteria and parisites after drinking bad water not sure what antibiotics those were.

I have done about 5 or 6 rounds of xifaxin and 2 rounds of augmentin so far.  I do pretty well while on the antibiotics but as soon as I'm off the intensity comes back.  The only side effect of the augmentin has been constipation.  One of my primary problems with the SIBO is diarrhea, so I give that up just to have the complete opposite happen with the pill.  Its frustrating.  There are only 20 or so places in the country that do the Hydrogen Breath Test.  I'm not sure where you live but I had mine done at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.  My doctor is Dr. Mark Pimentel who is the expert in the field of SIBO and has written a book called "A new IBS Solution".  It's all about this condition, the who, what, when, where, why, etc.  He said he has done a lot of research since he wrote the book, so the book is a little dated but it is a great place to start to get some information and to understand that you are not crazy, that your condition is real.  I bought a copy online and refer to it when I have those bad days.  There is an at home kit that your doctor can order through a company called QuinTron.  jt80, is that the one you have?  You should try it; it may finally give you an answer.  I know when I finally got an answer, it was a huge weight off my mind and helped my emotions so much.  I finally stopped thinking I was dying, it just felt like I was.  Don't get me wrong, I still have bad days because I guess I wanted a cure the minute I had a diagnosis, but that hasn't been the case.  My husband had a great piece of wisdom for me the other day when I couldn't stop crying: He said, "you went a year and a half with no diagnosis, no help and no hope.  You finally have an answer and someone who will help you, you have to give him some time to undo the damage of the year and a half you suffered."   Like I said before, I am hopeful that I will someday be normal again, that we all will.

Yes MommaHlomz I do have that test I'm just waiting for a good time to take it cause as you know your have to clear your body of certain foods that you cant eat for 36hours before you can take the test. The medical center that I got the test from I owe them money for my doctor's visit so I want to pay that off then take the test so that when I get to meet with my doctor for the results I'll have nothing to owe that place.I am hoping that will give me the answers that I've been searching for especially why I get diharrea so easily I two bad days experiencing that I'd rather go months without having to experience this issue I hate it with a passion oh and also the gas issue more then I'd like to have.I really feel all these problems are being caused by bad bacteria in my system that I need to get rid of bacteria not being found in stool samples.I'm sitting at home getting ready to leave for my GI appointment hoping it will go well and I'm going to ask my GI doctor about those antibiotics MommaHlomz that you took.Thank you for shaaring and I hope your having a great day and keep me in your prayers as I'm doing for you I hope things will get even better for you. :-)

I know EXACTLY what you mean, with the diarrhea, gas, owing money to doctor's, the whole bit.  Good luck at your appointment and please let me know how it goes.  I will definetly keep you in my prayers.  Prayer is what gets me through my days.  Good luck and I hope to hear from you soon.

I have been using Sustenex for a little over three months and love it!  I've been a long sufferer of gas, bloating, diarrhea - IBS, from almost the first day this product has provided relief. I am very impressed!!!

My social life is non-existent too. I also may have bacterial overgrowth, but I used one small bottle of probiotics and didn't notice a change. How long do you usually need to use probiotics before they start working? Can you get this Sustenex in Australia do you think?
