There is no cure for either IBS or Crohn's.  There are things you can do, some medicines you can take, which can make it better, but it will never be cured (at least there is nothing available right now that cures).  Crohn's can go into remission, which means no symptoms for a while, but it always comes back.

But neither is deadly, so there's no losing your girlfriend that way.  My great-uncle had Crohn's and lived to be 82.

Have you told your gf about this message board? There's also one for Crohn's. She doesn't have to talk; she can just read the messages. But there's a lot of good information floating around both places for things she can do to help her symptoms. Like calcium if she suffers from diarrhea, or probiotics regardless of her symptoms. The Crohn's people suggest different kinds of medicines (OTC and prescription) that can help. They also talk about the drawbacks to certain prescription drugs, like steriods. It can help her know what to ask for from her doctor, and know better how to manage what he might give her.
