I have suffered with symptoms of Fructose Malabsorption (FM) since my teens.  The symptoms have become increasingly bad, over the last decade.  I was finally diagnosed in November, 2009 (I'm 44).

I rely heavily on the information given in the book, "Fructose Malabsorption - The Survival Guide" by Deb and Bob Ledford.  Thank goodness they wrote this book!  Deb's symptoms were chronic constipation and mine include chronic diarrhea with severe cramping.

Gluten-free foods have been a little disappointing in texture.  Gluten isn't my issue but wheat has fructans, which is a big problem for most people with FM.  I'm looking for products or recipes that result in foods closest in texture to wheat-based products.  I can only use organic cane sugar as a sweetener and really no fruits in the mix (except blueberries or dried cranberries - I do okay with those).  No wheat, rye, or corn, either.  I'm wondering if Wheat Gluten is fructan-free...?  I can't find any info about that, online, and don't know how to find out.

you might post the question on helpforibs bb, as there is a member there named syl that knows a lot about this and has IBS and fructose issues.

Do you have IBS as well?

I have gluten intolerance, fructose intolerance, lactose intolerance and a whole bunch of intolerance. Unfortunately, some of the Gluten free foods may have fructose. I am already unlimited in diet and had to go on-line to see what fructose is in. You will be shocked about how many foods have fructose in it. I have been on this diet for 2 years, since I found out. it is unfortunate because if I eat one thing, something else I can not have is in it. Also, a lot of artificial sweeteners have fructose in them, so be careful. Good luck with everything.

Have you tried spelt bread? It's the closest I have found in both taste and texture to wheat bread.

I have FM, IBS, and a questionable IBD diagnoses according to my current GI.

Anyway.....try reading the book "Sugar Fix".  I have been following the diet in that book with good success.  Sour dough and rye bread have no fructose.  You still need to read the label and look for sugar as some brands add it to make the bread brown when cooked.  But the organic versions I have found are good, my local grocery store and Whole Foods have some.

Gluten free doesn't mean fructose free.....I wish it did cause then I could eat brownies and cake again!!!  Man I crave sweet stuff!!

I have the same problem because on top of gluten wheat, lactose and MSG intolerance, I also have a fructose intolerance. A lot of gluten free, wheat free foods have fructose in them, so it suck, especially with desserts. I am already limited as it is, and plus with my diarrhea, I am also thinking receiving parenteral nutrition as a last resort. Plus, a lot of medications, especially powders and liquid contain fructose or high fructose corn syrup, including anti-diarrhea powders and medications, so that is why I can not find any medication for it. I even had prescriptions that made things worse because of it. I am unable to digest pills or solid form because it goes right through me, out whole out of me ( I had a total colectomy and my doctor said that can happen a lot, but rare). It is so hard, especially when a lot of products do not list fructose as an allergen warning, leaving us to figure out what if safe and what is not.
