Hi, I am new to this forum and need help. I have had IBS symptoms for years with diarrhoea (not sure if I spelled that correctly) but the symptoms only occur about 3 times a year. These spasmodic bouts are crippling and usually last only about a week to two at a time. The rest of the year I suffer with gas and loose stools. I am English but now live in Ibiza and although I learned a little Spanish - the doctors speak Catalan! they have very little idea what I am saying and I have no idea what they are saying to me! How can I get a diagnosis? My Enlgish GP told me years ago that it might be IBS but Is it likely to be IBS if I dont suffer from it that much? After looking at the Rome Criteria it appears that I should have symptoms at least 3 times in a 6 month period which is not the case. If not IBS what could it be? Please help as I am in the middle of a bout right now and it is awful.

To give you a better idea of me I am 48 years old, possibly pre-menopausal (again this comes in bouts) have achy muscles/joints most of the time, suffer from headaches regularly and mild migraines occasionally. I eat 3 meals per day including cereal for breakfast, usually a sandwich for lunch and then dinner consists of either pasta, chicken, salad etc. Nothing out of the ordinary, I work full time during the summer months as a cleaning manager then take 6 months off during the winter. I dont exercise as I work hard in summer but walk quite a lot in winter.

I currently take 500mg Glucosamine powder daily for arthritis
500mg Calcium daily for osteoarthritis
Paracetamol for headaches usually about 8 per week
Naramig (my wonde drug!) for migraines about once per week/fortnight

Do you eat/drink foods with aspartame or sucralose (splenda)? How long have you had your symptoms? Were you ever on antibiotic treatments? Could be fungal overgrowth.

Hi thanks for replying. Yes, my diet consists of things that are low sugar which then includes aspartame. I only drink low calorie soda and have sweetener in coffee. I haven't had any antibiotics for years now. As I type, the symptoms are abating now after 11 days but I am still bloated and in pain. I will have the same symproms again about 3 times a year and have been having this for about 5 years but looking back now, I can't seem to find a trigger.

OK- artificial sweetener is definitely a trigger. Read the following on some of the problems they can cause:

I'm wondering if you may be affected by mold, as well. Do you move around a lot, change offices, classrooms, homes? Do you live in a climate that promotes mold? Is it the same time each year you are affected...seasonal?
