I prefer organic yogurt myself, it has the highest concentrations of acidophlis. I also take a probiotic pill each evening (see my bio). The yogurt that seems to help me the most right now is Brown Cow, vanilla flavor ideally. But I'll take Maple (the ones with fruit are hard on my GI tract). Another good organic yogurt line is Stonyfield.

RE:  Probiotics:    I have been taking various Probiotics for several years and have recently seen a new gastroenterologist who prescribed VSLIII (Walgreen's either has it in stock or will order it).  It has made a very positive change in my IBS symptoms of both constipation and diarrhea.  There is a website for it and he prescribed 2 @ morning.  It is a bit more money than most--$42 for 30 days but it's been so worth it for me.
RE: Colon cleanse:  I have had two MDs and a chiropractor tell me to stay away from those for now until or maybe never your intestinal track shows some sort of healing.  So many people start a colon cleanse with an irritated intestinal track and that just makes it worse.  So I'm waiting on that one and since the VSLIII is doing a good job for me, I may never do a colon cleanse.

I wonder if this disorder every disappears completely.  I had a very simple dinner out last night--fettucinne (sauce on the side) with grilled chicken strips, small amount of salad w/vinagarette dressing on the side and I had no unusual problems this morning.  However, I have found if I went out and ate the same thing another night, I could awake the next morning and spend hours in the bathroom so I just don't get it...

I love this forum and all of its information.  It's comforting to know that this disorder is not just affecting one person--but with all the people it affects, why can't they find a cure???

I'm usually on the UC forum but I could tell you that colon cleansers are irritating and can cause you more grief.  As for the probiotics Renew Life Ultimate Flora Critical Care is an excellent one, it contains 50billion live cultures and is found in the refridgerator in the Health Food Stores.  They come in capsules and are best when taken one an empty stomach.  I take 2 a day morning and right before bed.  Sometimes I alternate with the probiotic BIO_K PLUS, it comes in capsules and in liquid form another excellent probiotic containing 50 billion cultures.

puffed rice - I looked up the probiotic yuo take and it has 50 Billion, whereas mine has 5 (but I often take 2 a day, making that 10 billion I'm taking in). Not to mention the organic yogurt.

Now I'm starting to wonder if I would benefit from the one you take?

I see there are two, one for people over 50 (30 Billion levels) but the one you take is 50 Billion.

I've had a rough 2 to 3 week patch, where my GI tract was out of whack, then I got a stubborn yeast infection, then a cold sore! My GI tract has been unusually noisy too. I want it to quiet down!

If you were you me, would you take the one for older people (I'm almost 55 but read my bio, my GI is anything but normal.....lol) or the one you take?

From reviews I read online, it seems very safe (the Ultimate Flora one......) and people rave about it.

Thanks so much for any feedback you can give me. Here all this time I though the Nature's Way was good for my gut (it is, but maybe the concentrated levels are way too low for what I need, I tend to get sick a lot too, my immune system isn't even near normal either).

Puffed Rice - second reply, you must be hanging out over at the UC forum. Hoping you check in here!!!! Anyway, just wanted to say thank you for indirectly helping me but your post was in answer to another member and their situation (Grinch).

I began researching the Ultimate Flora probiotic you mentioned, I visited my local health food store. They stocked both the 30 billion (for people over 50) and the 50 billion one (that you take). Sitting on this refrigerator shelf was the Nature's Way probiotic I've been taking, at 5 billion. So I called the clerk over and told her my situation, she was actually aghast. I laughed (this is what I do when I shock someone!) and said - well I've been living this way for 11 years now.....but I survived cancer. I usually have to give the person some hope to hold onto.....lol. But yeah, they usually are ready to weep for me!

Long story short, she said I needed the 50 billion one, so tonight before bedtime I'm taking one.

Wish me luck.

She said I'd notice a difference in a day. I am hoping my gut calms way the heck down, my stool will be formed and easily passed (not messy). I know I will have multiple bm's for the rest of my life, that's a given since my sigmoid is 90% gone but I do want to keep the stool as normal a consistency as possible. I am hoping this product does just that!

So thanks.....

Hi Marsky,
I  am usually on the UC forum daily so I don't normally check this one as often, but I'm glad you found the probiotic at your health food store.  I've tried a few out there and this one the Renew Life- Ultimate Flora critical care and the Bio-K Plus are by far the best ones that really do work.  I always take 2 a day first thing in the morning and always before bed.  When things calm down for you then I would cut back to one but the more good bacteria in my colon the better.

puffed rice - thanks so much for support. So far I've been on the 50 Billion count one for 1 week, I take 1 pill a day, at bedtime on an empty stomach. Early on I felt rumbling and added GI tract noise and thought oh no, here comes D. But each time it passed. Mostly I've noticed my gut is just a lot quieter, overall, and I no longer have the messy stool.

I guess it is safe to take double doses? I saw one of their products have 200 Billion count good bacteria. Wow, that pill/dose must really turn people around!

For now I'm going to stick with the 1 pill a day. I went from 5 Billion to 50 in a 24 hour period. Was worried at first I had started a new "medication" and shouldn't have but it all worked out just fine. Went out of town and everything! Well I did eat very light the entire weekend (my usual travel mode) but I wasn't messed up at all!

I'm so glad you posted on the IBS forum and then I peeked in at the UC forum to gather more info.

Thanks again for all your help.
