I have been taking VSL#3 for about 6-7 months now as it seems to be working. I still have problems but they do not seem to be as severe and frequent. That part makes me very happy! The only downside to this probiotic is that it costs $80.00 for a month's supply. The cost is getting to be a little too much to keep up with. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for a good probiotic that is less expensive but just beneficial as VSL#3. If the VSL#3 gave me relief 100% of the time I wouldn't mind paying $80.00; it would be worth it! Since it isn't doing that I think it is time to try something else that may help me even more. Thanks in advance!

Not sure what one to really recommend, but try to find one with Bifidobacterium infantis in it if you can.

I pay around $45 for 30 pills, mine is 80 Billion count. Sometimes I take two a day (but not every day of a given month, only when I feel things are getting off track).

I would have to say I probably spend around $50-60, counting the extra pill I take now and then.

The brand name I take is in my sig and are sold at health food stores, in the chilled section.

RENEW LIFE-ULTIMATE FLORA CRITICAL CARE (50 billion live cultures per capsule) is a great probiotic that many of us on the Ulcerative Colitis Forum take.   It is one that has kept me in remission for a while.  I buy it in the health food store.

puffed rice - because of you, I take it now too and have noticed a marked improvement in my IBS symptoms. My stool consistency is more predictable, my gut is just quieter, less inflamed, less irritated.

I started with the 50 billion (which is around $37 for a bottle of 30). But noticed the 80 billion one next to it. I have found that the 80 billion count is better for me. Which of course means more money. But worth it.

Marsky,  I have not seen the 80 billion  one in the health food stores that I go to only the 50 billion.  I would probably get the 80 billion one if it was available where I shop.  So glad to hear that it is helping thats what we are all here for to hopefully help each other.

How do you know for sure whether there's 50 billion or 80 billion? I think you should take the capsules apart and count them to make sure tongue

I would suggest you visit the Renew Life website (.com). Click on "our products", far left hand side near the top. From there you'll see a listing for their probiotics, Ultimate 80 is 5 down. Click on it and you'll see what the actual label looks like. Of course you can order Renew Life directly from the company but I since my health food store has prices very close to their website I buy mine locally (for 80 billion, their website seems to be lower than what the 50 billion sells for near my home).

As far as knowing for certain how specific each capsule is and what it contains, I am trusting this company that there is 80 billion count in each pill. I always make sure it's kept in the fridge.

I take mine on an empty stomach at bedtime. I read somewhere (probably the UC forum here) that if you take it on an empty stomach, it goes straight to the lower colon.

Also, we've traveled twice since May, and each time I take along a small cooler and keep the pills in it. At first I trusted a small bottle Colace had come in to keep the moisture out of it but moisture got in. The pills eventually discolored. Second trip, I used the bottle and a small snack size zip lock bag. That worked. The pills stayed dry and were chilled the entire time I was away from home.

You may wonder why I jumped to 80 from 50. 50 worked well but when I went to buy the second bottle, I saw 80 sitting right there and it stated it was for the colon. So I pulled the clerk aside (nice lady around my age) and told her my brief story. I had both in my hands - 50 and 80. She strongly suggested the 80, given all that I've been thru. It's funny, the sheer second it hits someone that I have as many bm's per day that I do, a light bulb comes on, as if they're immediately putting me in that different camp - she nodded her head and said - you need 80!

So that's how I ended up with 80.

Of course I should point out that I am often a skeptic when shopping. I don't always trust store displays, buy 3, get 1 free type deals. Best example was Bath & Body works, I was shopping for stocking stuffers years ago and my teen daughter was into these products. I got one but the clerk gave me the 3 for 1 schpeel, I said no thank you. I'd be spending more money on the 2nd product. When my daughter didn't need 3 bottles of body wash or whatever the heck she liked at the time (all products that gave me instant headaches anyway, lol). This health food clerk could have been trying to make more money but I trust that she knew what my insides needed.

I prefer the 80. It just seems to work for me.

Wow; thank you all for your input. I am very excited to try a new route to see if it will help me even more with my problems. The price seems right as well! I guess I need to decide if I want to try the 50 or 80 billion. It seems like I should try the 50 first so I know if it works for me or not. Thank you again for help and assistance!

I'd start with 50. If you think you need more on any given day, you can take two, one in the am, one at bedtime.

I recall seeing a 60 pill bottle of 50 billion, which was cheaper than if you bought two bottles of 30 pills. So if you find that 50 billion works well for you, keep that in mind (larger bottle, more cost effective).

Prior to all this, I was taking a 5 billion count pill (Nature's Way). FIVE! No wonder it wasn't helping me. I just needed more than 5 billion.

I have to recommend Florajen3. I take 3-6 caps a day (which is what my Gastro told me to do) and they have helped a lot.
