Has anyone tried carafate. It is a drug used for ulcers but someone I know has IBS and has been on it for 6 months and swears by it. I just started taking it 2 days ago. I'll let you know how it works for me.

My doctor had me on it for my ulcer a long time ago however I could not take it anymore because it caused my constipation to be worse. I haven't heard it used for IBS or any other disorder. I know that my doctor had me on it as a short term treatment and didn't know it could be used long term. Did you doctor prescribe it to you to use short term or as a regular maintenance med?

Have been on Carafate for a week now and just increased the dose yesterday. Today experienced slight stomach trouble but much improved. Will post up in a week. BTW a friend of mine has severe IBS like me and told me about this med. I called my dr and he got me the prescription. I haven't talked to him about this med but apparently it has no real side effects. I am now taking 4 a day. It coats your stomach and intestine lining so it helps with spasm due to foods.

Hi eric-
I know this post was from 2 YEARS ago but maybe u will still get the alert.  How did carafate end up working out for u?  Just started it last week.  Also do u remember how much u took?  Thank you so much.  Hopefully by now u are feeling as good as new!

Was curious that the Carafate worked for IBS. I didn't realize that you could be on it for a long time. I was given it some time ago for gastritis but couldn't get those horse pills down except to coat with butter. For some reason my dr. doesn't prescribe it anymore. Curious to hear how Eric did. It sure does constipate you.

Sounds interesting. BTW what symptoms of IBS does carafate take care of? Does it help with the bloating, gas, and D? Thanks.
