Hello~

I started Zelnorm finally, on Friday. I just wanted to share my experience with it so far to see if this is all normal....
I took my first dose on friday evening before bed...I was up all night sick with D. I knew this was a side effect so I kept taking it. I haven't had D since but I feel very...hollow. I hear that all familiar rumble but nothing happens. I am able to go more frequently than I ever have (twice since friday) but it is still not everyday. Will it take a while for this to kick in or should I be seeing some results already? Also, I noticed I have a rash on my back. It doesn't bother me at all but its there. It can be totally unrelated but I don't know for sure.....
Thanks for listening!

Hey Shel! Glad you started the Zelnorm and are getting some help (I think that's what you'd call it).
The D is/was normal as long as it doesn't last longer than a week. Also, it is absolutely normal to feel empty because you are "going" more often. Things should start to normalize. However, I am a little concerned about your rash....
The rash, if I remember correctly, can be an allergic reaction. I would call the doc immediately and see what he/she thinks. Don't panic though, as long as your heartbeat and breathing aren't off then it isn't an emergency. But do call the doc ASAP.
Please keep posting.

Shel, I just looked up Zelnorm and it's side effects.  This is what I got from MedlinePlus:

Some side effects can be serious. If you experience either of the following symptoms or the symptoms mentioned in the SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS section, call your doctor immediately:

  • rash
  • hives
  • itching
  • swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, or eyes
  • difficulty breathing and swallowing
  • hoarseness

Please call your doc ASAP.

Thanks Lil!

I will call my Dr. today....I just didn't think much of it becuase its not bothering me at all and I didn't notice it until today. So, being that I started the zelnorm on Fri, I assumed it was unrelated. I'm glad I mentioned it, though. I will get it checked out and let you know! Thanks again for your concern!

I'm glad you are calling the doc. The rash may be unrelated but you never know... "Better to be safe than sorry."
Please let us know what happens. I really hope it is not the Zelnorm.

Hey Lil~

Sorry I didn't get back right away...it has been a crazy week. My dr. didn't want to see me. I described the rash and he thought it was unrelated. He said to just watch it and let him know if it worsens (it hasn't). We think it may be a reaction to the chemicals in my parents spa...there are little bumps with a head...resembles chicken pox. but they are just in the one area and are not bothersome at all....just another weird thing to add to my list of ailments, I guess! Anyway, I am releved I do not have to stop the zelnorm. It does seem to be helping a bit... I was actually able to do some running around for halloween without incident. That's a rarity for me. Thanks again for your concern!! HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!! :)

Shel, I'm so glad you got to talk to your doc. Make sure to watch the rash closely and keep an eye open for any possible (other) signs of allergy.
On the upside though... I am so happy it seems to be working for you. It means a lot to us when we can go out without incident. I hope you'll have many other incident free days.

Happy Halloween to you too!
I saw on the Crohn's board (or was it UC?) one of the member's is going to be a toilet. LOL Pretty appropriate for us here too.

Shel,

I take it you have constipation?

I take Zelnorm too.  But Zelnorm by itself is not enough.  If you combine Zelnorm w/Citrucel you will do much better.  You can change your bowel habits from once every 3 days to closer to once a day or at least every other day.

Eat more fiber.  I am realizing fiber really helps IBS.

Take accidophilus too because you will get some toxins from IBS and accidophilus will help
