Hey guys!  I was just wondering, after FIVE DAYS WITHOUT DIARRHEA (very significant after a year of chronic diarrhea with maybe 2-3 days, at most, between garden hose episodes), if it's the probiotics doing me so much good.  When you started taking them, did you find that your poos were more formed, or that you went less often, or both?  How long did it take for them to start making a noticeable difference in your poos?

I'm just trying to establish a pattern.  Wondering if it's a compound effect.  For instance, it takes some SSRIs about 4-5 weeks to build up in your system enough to make symptoms of depression less noticeable - are these probiotics the same way?  I'm also taking lots of fiber supplements which may be contributing as well.  Over the past five days I've gone 12 times and they've all been formed.  Woah!

Hi Sarita,
I take probiotics but I'm not usually a garden hose.... that is reserved for my "special" days. However, when I am having D I always take probiotics after my trips to the bathroom and it seems to work. I usually only go a few times.
I'm not sure about the bulk though. I think that is more fiber and your lack of runny D (since its not all coming out there is more in there to give it bulk). Just a guess though, I don't know.
Congrats on your run of not having D! Hope it keeps up....

I'd guess that the combination of fibre increase and the probiotics is contributing to your change in stool formation...keep up the good work, going from D to formed stools is half the battle right!!

Take care!

Hi jimmy,
I think I have heard of this a few times. Do you find this at the health food store? I wonder if it would help me and my nausea and hunger pangs (That would be wonderful).

Bunny, right now I am taking 6 a day and each capsule has something like 2.5 billion viable organisms (it touts 10+, but that's at time of manufacture; lots of 'em die off as time goes by).  So you're probably safe with up to four of those puppies, but work up to it, and don't go beyond a therapeutic dose for you.

My dad has just got me some of the acidophilus, but apparently the lady in the shop said I should be taking just one of these a day but at night, so it gives it chance to work properly in my gut.

Is this right?  It says something different on the bottle, and I want to make sure I'm taking these properly to get the best out of them.  I've never had them before so it's all a bit new to me!

des,

you can get Primal Defense in a health food store or you can order it online as well.

I go to the vitamin shoppe but they have an online ordering site as well here's the link:

http://vitaminshoppe.com/search/query.jhtml;$sessionid$4ED1NP3RMREP0CQUAOWSFEQKCQB1AGXK?q=primal+defense&l=&b=&d=&pr=&k=&ist=&pt=Acidophilus+Complex

do you get hunger pangs shortly after you get?

evie, I would take around 4-5 caps of acidophilus spread throughout the day.  acidophilus will never hurt you and you can never overload on it.  its a natural good bacteria

try Primal Defense it has various forms of acidophilus and works good.

also try taking garlic (caps) they make specific ones for digestion.  that helps

Hi jimmy,
I get that gnawing feeling and get it very often that tricks my body into thinking I'm hungry so I've started eating many smaller meals throughout the day and I know to everyone it looks like I'm stuffing my mouth all the time. I do eat healthy meals but I would rather not have to have something every hour to please my stomach. We have a Vitamin Shoppe two blocks away from the house, I think I might stop in there and check it out. Thank you so much. (lets cross our fingers :)

Well, my winning streak ended on Saturday with several lovely garden-hose episodes.  A couple today so far as well.  Sigh...what is it, two steps forward, one step back?  I'm going to keep on keeping on with these probiotics.  They are going to help me whether they want to or not!!

Oh Sarita, I'm sorry. Look on the bright side... if you had many good days in the recent past, you will probably have them again. Keep taking those supplements and hold on.
So does this mean you were able to get the sample for the AZ guru? Hopefully you will get some answers with that.

I agree. You've seen a lot of improvement with the probiotics, you are right not to let a few setbacks keep you away. The fact the you are improving is the key. Even if its just a slight improvement, its better than no improvement, right? Take care :)

Gads.  I feel like a dork.  You know I've been on antibiotics for strep throat (may be to blame for the crazy garden hose episodes this weekend) and I just collected a sample for Dr. Parasite Man before reading the directions, which explicitly state, "Wait two weeks prior to collecting a specimen if you have been on antibiotics." Way to go, Sarah.  Sat on my bathroom floor scooping diarrhea into a plastic tube and it's a bogus sample!  So have to wait two more weeks and then get another kit for collection.  D'oh!

How the heck do you get D into a cup? When I had to provide my stool sample I didn't know how I was going to get my poo in the tiny container. I don't even want to describe how I finally managed (**cringing**).

Go to the nearest lab or hospital and ask for one of those toilet trays, to collect specimen in, then do your business in it and transfer it with a tounge depresser into the little bottle they give you. You have to be very careful that you used sterilized things like the dpresser and toilet trays because when they test your sample it can detect alot of things that arn't even from your sample necessarily but from un-sterilized things that your sample has come into contact with.

Take care!

Yeah, I have all the tools necessary for proper stool collection...when I have to collect watery D, I usually just end up pouring it in using the little narrow "valley" in the plastic toilet bucket-thingy.  Have had some very not-so-pleasant experiences doing that (lets just say it involved lots of Lysol and paper towels).  Jeez louise!  Luckily when I did it today, it was of a consistency that made it somewhat scoopable with the little spoon that came in the O&P pack.  Hah!

LOL
I never thought I would have a discussion about collecting runny poo in a tiny cup and needing Lysol and paper towels. I love this website! :)
