What happens to you guys when you have high fructose corn syrup? This could be coincidental, but I drank about half of a lemonade-type thing from Minute Maid and it had high fructose corn syrup and a MASSIVE amount of sugar (close to 50 grams) and im cramping pretty bad...is that normal? Just wondering..

Hi Blondie15:)

Corn syrup and sugar alcohols should be avoided especially if you suffer with IBS or any other gastro conditions...it's been researched and stated that as little as 1/2 stick of extra gum can cause D, cramps, gas and bloating...specific sugar alcohols are sorbitol, lactitol, mannitol, maltitol, and xylitol...start reading lables in everything before you ingest it to avoid unnecessary symptoms due to these ingredients.

Sugar promotes bacterial overgrowth which can throw off the balance of the gut flora also causing above symptoms, so I cut sugar almost completely out of my diet...processed foods aren't any good health wise either.

Take care

I read an small quote from a G.I. peditrician who blamed excessive amounts of sugar for the increase in g.i. diseases he was seeing in children. I don't know that that's backed up by science, but he probably has a reason--given the numbers of kids he sees and talks to--for thinking that's a cause.

I have heard sugar promotes bad bacterial growth... Maybe kids are eating too much sugar.
