Hey yall,
Well im back, my doctor refilled my medicine but i had to go get a blood test done today. Liver enzyme test. He said it is just routine. I took the first pill last evening and havent had any diarreha today. But, im bloated, and all i ate was sausage links and dry toast for breakfast. Both my gastro and my med-do are concerned about my loss of weight. duh!! In the end of august i had 3 weeks of 12 or more trips to the bathroom a day. I couldnt even eat!! All i was doing was trying to keep myself hydrated.  Husband finally made me go to gastro doc. I had already had a colonscopy done in 2002 and everything was okay. Thats when he diagnosed the IBS. Put me on a med then , 12 a day for a month. It got only, hadnt had another problem till this year, went through 3 months of my m other in law in hospital dying of cancer and was there everday, wasnt hungry, but drank lots of liguids everyday. Not until a couple of week after she passed did i get the diarreha. My gastro test stools, for everything from c-diff to parasites. Nothing, no blood, nothing. He put m e on entocort ec and the diarreha stopped immediately, three pills a day, then tapered to two pills a day, then one pill a day. He also did blood tests wh ich came back okay. So my last pill was December 14.2005 and i seemed okay, was starting to gain weight. Then had some bad news about my son.  And january 2, the diarreha started all over again, so my husband made me call the gastro doc to see if he would refill the pills for me again. He said he would but he wanted me to take a blood test again. Ive tried the calcium treatment , the fiber treatment, neither worked for me.  the scarey part for me is the losing weight, i also take zoloft and thought m aybe that could be part of the cuase for losing weight, cause i dont have an appetite, God, i dont know, Guess we are all searching for answers.  Anyway, sorry for going on and on, i know you have all heard this before. My main question is does or has anyone else lost signifigant weight with IBS-D. Im 5'2" and i now weigh 98 pds. which has been a struggle to gain back. i was down to 94pds. i have been drinking ensure also. Thanks so much for your feedback on my  questions. Your all in my prayers, i know so many of you are worse off than i am. God Bless you all smurf

I'm down too... I'm 5'4", 106lb.  Before IBS hit me like a train I weighed 125 at my heaviest.  The nausea and D just didn't warrant a healthy appetite.  I think the trick is to eat frequently.  Have many small meals a day.

How long did you try the calcium?  I don't get it because it really should work.  confused    Keeping up with vitamins and Ensure is probably doing you a lot of good if you're not eating well.  When you can eat try eating really healthy - like fruits, veggies, greens and stuff like liver.  Liver is loaded with vitamins.

I have a high motabolism so it is hard for me (sounds like maybe you too).  I also just got off the pill so that made me drop even more weight.  I'm just trying to eat healthy (but I'm still eating the fatty yummy desserts too!).

People with Crohn's are often thin or at least have their weight fluctuate dramatically as they have flare-ups and remissions. I think we have at least one Crohnnie here on this board, but you may want to pop over to their board and see if they have any suggestions for things to eat when you're not feeling well and how to put weight back on when you are doing better. I think for most of them skinny is a way of life. My great-uncle had it and there never was much of him. Given that he just passed away last year at the age of 82, I don't think his being underweight affected him much healthwise. You may find it's just easier not to worry about your weight and to eat until you are full when you are fine and not eat when you are sick and don't feel like taking food. Focus on getting nutrition, not weight gain. If people give you grief over it, tell them that you have a medical condition, not an eating disorder and leave it at that.

One thing that you do want to be careful of is that weight does have a link to osteoporosis. Heavier women are less likely to have the disorder and less likely to suffer (i.e. break bones) due to it. I guess a little padding helps when you fall! You may want to talk to a gyn about your weight and bone loss and see if you need to take calcium supplements to head off problems before they start. This is especially important if you have a family history of it.

Oh man...I guess the grass is always greener because I have the opposite problem...my IBS has caused me to actually GAIN weight. im a pretty big girl, im 5'10 and weight roughly 150 lbs. Im also a big athlete and play tons of volleyball, and lift weights almost every day so I guess muscle accounts for some of that. But still I cant seem to lose weight because almost every time I have D after a meal, im immediatly hungry again and i'll go eat again. But then after I re-eat I dont have the D again..which is weird. And of course when Im constipated (ive got both joys haha) i'll gain weight because I cant get rid of my food! Blah!!
I wish the best of luck to all people trying to gain weight..haha i wish i could give you mine!!

you are doing good with drinking ensure. eat what you can when you can, as long as it doesn't bother your stomach. i have crohns and ibs so it's a pain, losing wieght and all. i'm 5'8 and was close to 100lbs at one point. i gained my wieght back by prednisone though so i don't know exactly what foods would help you. have you tried talking to a nutritionist (sp)? that might be a way to start. goodluck to you though.
