Hello I am Anne,
I moved to UK a year ago and since then the sympthoms have started:
Not only I've put on a lot of weight because of the diet change but I started to have a lot of gas and my number 2s were smelling a lot.
The gas are happenning mainly during the evenings, nights and mornings and I do have diahrea sometimes but not always.
I finally had the courage to go to my doctor this morning explaining all this uncomfortable problems and he told me I had IBS...
He gave me some pills made of peppermint oil to take 3 times a day for 2 weeks. Does it really work?
Do you have any other advice for me to follow?
I have a very stressful life and very little time to cook or to exercise...which I know could help but I really can't change my way of life that easily as I am self employed...

Hi Anne,
Welcome to Healing Well :)

The peppermint is for your cramping and nausea. I personally can't take them because of my GERD however I do here they have enteric coated ones those thats a possibility. So I don't have much advice on it besides some people do say that they are helpful. Antispasmodics are good for cramping which is what I take and I have the sublingual tablets so they are fast acting. I wouldn't suggest imodium in your situation since you do not have an ongoing problem with diarrhea. Imodium on a regular basis should be used with caution and only with the blessing of your doctor. Keeping a food diary to identify which foods cause you the most problems is the best advice I can get. Food and stress are the top factors that set our IBS in a tailspin so finding out what to avoid makes a difference in your quality of life. We can't get it perfect but the less suffering we cause ourselves is the key.
Hugs, Des

Hi Anne,
Welcome to HealingWell! :-)
The peppermint will also help you with the gas. You may want to try avoiding gassy foods like raw vegetables, raw fruits and beans. Dbab mentioned keeping a food diary - this is a great idea to pinpoint exactly what is causing you the most trouble.
You can try taking probiotics too. They are essential for good digestion and really can't hurt.
Take care.
