Hi ladies-
I've been sick for a week (fever, cramps, D 10+ times a day filled with mucus) and I just got the culture back from the lab.  It appears I have Shigella.  I now have to take an antibiotic for this, and I had C-Diff before so I am terrified.  I am so sick of living in Bolivia and being sick. My husband loves it here because he gets to save a lot of money, but I am sadly starting to think that I am going to have to go back home, with or without him.  I am very depressed from being sick all the time.
Does anyone know about shigella?  I am sure Sarita will, since she's been to this crappy country.

(((HUGS m&ms)))
Can't you just take a butt-load of probiotics to replenish what the antibiotics kill?

Oh, m&ms, I'm so sorry to hear about this nasty bug you've contracted.  Shigella sucks!  I've never had it but had very similar bacterial or parasitic infections.  I remember riding the barge across Lake Titicaca from Bolivia to Peru, just feeling like I wanted to die...and then the bus ride, having the bus driver stop every few minutes so I could go explode on the side of the road.  Oh, I do not envy your position right now...I feel for you.

I hope you are taking Cipro, because a lot of Shigella organisms are becoming resistant to the typical sulfa drugs normally given.  Do you have access to any kind of probiotics?  I would stuff yourself silly with those while you are on the antibiotics.  That will help dissuade the C. diff from overtaking your system.

It is so hard to keep going, I know, when you are in the midst of extreme poverty, watching people take dumps on the sidewalk, not having any of the typical "comforts" of home, being so sick, and feeling scared about how these bugs are going to mess you up.  I distinctly remember some very helpless moments, especially being alone in the African bush, where all I wanted was some cold ginger ale and a heating pad but had to make do with warm Tang in iodine-treated water and a 100-degree tent.  I'd just be crying from the misery, very depressed.  I wish that feeling on no one.  I am so sorry you feel this way.  Before you think seriously about leaving, though, make sure you get over this illness.  Being so sick won't allow you to think clearly.

I'll write more later, I'm at work...hang in there girl!

That was a very understanding response, Sarita. My GI doc here thinks I should try to ride it out without antibiotics because I have been on several in the past year and don't have a fever anymore. I laughed about the people dumping on the sidewalk part! I still can't get used to that. I was supposed to go to Argentina today (where my husband is), but the Bolivian Airline decided to go on strike 5 minutes before my flight went off. I really just need to be with him right now - here or in Argentina - because I am sick and need his help. So now he is stuck there, I am here alone with our 3 yr old, and dissapointed beyond belief.
Why did you go to so many 3rd world countries? Were you in the Peace Corp?

Man, there is nothing like being sick to make you want to be HOME.
