Hi everyone! I have never posted on the IBS page before.  I am a ulcerative colitis girl.  My doctor recently prescribed Zelnorm as I have been having major bouts of constipation.  If I have read correctly this seems to be more of a IBS drug as opposed to an IBD drug so I wanted to get any opinions/thoughts/etc. you guys have on Zelnorm.  Thanks!!!!  Tabitha

Hi Tabitha, welcome to IBS! :-)
Zelnorm isn't only for IBS (or IBD). It is for anyone who has a slow digestive tract. I used it for about 8 months and I loved it. I went from "going" every 3 or 4 days to every day or every other day. At first it gave me a headache but after a couple days that went away. I felt a little off (stomach a bit queasy) as well for the first couple days. I did not have D, nor did I feel dizzy. If you do try Zelnorm and you get a lot of D or you feel dizzy and/or light headed, stop taking it and call your doc.
There are a few of us here who liked it and a few others who didn't. I hope it works for you! Please keep us posted.

7lIL, My Dr. gave me samples but I have not taken it yet since I seem to be doing OK with Digestive Advantage which is a heck of a lot cheaper. I am still having some problem with the constipation but no symptoms of the IBS except that. My Dr. wanted me to take it only once a day for some reason. Did you take it once or twice a day. it is really expensive.

Hi Canyon,
I started taking 6mgs (3mgs twice a day) for about a month. After that my doc increased the dosage to 12mgs (6mgs twice a day) for as long as I wanted. When I felt like stopping I could. I ended up staying on 12mgs a day for a few months. Afterwards I went back down to 6mgs a day and started taking lots of probiotics. This went on for 8 months. Now I just stick to lots of probiotics and some Metamucil.
If you feel DA is working great for you then stick to it. Take Zelnorm when you are ready. Be aware of the possible side effects and know how to identify them if you do start Zelnorm.
Good luck!

I took Zelnorm for a couple months started on 6 mg once a day, and continued on. At first, I didn't seem to have any relief, but I did notice it helped my gas...belly, but not my constipation. My gastro doc then added glycolax which did help, but increased my gas. I have been off of both for almost two months, and since taking the Activia the past 10 days, I have felt so much better! I did change my diet though, not sure if it is the healthiest, but the safest for me right now. BTW-I did not have any side effects, and we are all different when it comes to medications.

I took my first one tonight and can hear things rumbling in my intestines. I thought I was going to get diahrea but nothing has happened. I will try it once a day before dinner and watch for side effects.
The DA has definetly helped with the IbS symptoms, gas, pain, etc but not much with the C. I think I need more fiber. I was having no problem with C when this all came on so don't know what to think. Thanks for your post.

Don't worry about the rumbling, it is common. Don't worry about D either, if you get it. Only start to worry if it is REALLY bad or if it goes on for more than a few days. Also, if you get dizzy or light headed... Stop taking Zelnorm. I had mild cramps for the first day or 2, so don't worry if that happens either.
You'll know if something is wrong.

Good luck and please keep us posted. :-)

Thanks for the info. I really "let go" so to speak after I posted a couple times but then either I was empty or it subsided. I will give it a couple days. Was wondering if cutting it down to 3mg(like cutting the pill in half) would do anything. I have the 6mg one and my Dr. said I should take it once a day and I thought he said when I need it but now I wonder if that makes sense. I am pretty sure he said that. I guess he meant when I was having an attack but since I went on the DA I have had no attacks but still have the C. If I dont have to take it I dont want to.

YES, cutting the pill in half should help (but not make all the side effects go away). In fact, your doc should have prescribed it that way - 1/2 in the morning before breakfast and 1/2 in the evening before dinner. It's hormonal so it is best to be taken in smaller doses to begin with - then you can ease into 1 full pill twice a day.
Please remember I am not a doc, I just speak from experience and lots of research. If you have any concerns contact your doc or pharmacist.

He only wanted me to take it once a day for some reason. Maybe mine is not that bad. I will see him in a couple weeks as I postponed my appt next week cause I just started the Zelnorm and I wanted to give the IBS DA a chance to work. I don't want to take anymore drugs than necessary. First off Zelnorm is very expensive so if I don't really need it I don't even want to take it. Except for intermittant constipation I am not having any other symptoms of IbS now. He is a good Dr. with Stanford but I am always willing to listen to other opinions. He is the kind that will work with you but I know he only said once a day as he mentioned that twice and Istill think he said "if needed"

Canyon,
Do you live in the CA bay area? I see a GI doc at Stanford (but mine is a woman). :-)
I wouldn't take any unnecessary drugs either. If you don't need Zelnorm then don't take it. Wait for it to be your last resort.

I do. Mine is not practicing there but is connected someway. I live in Fremont. Well, I will never take Zelnorm again. As I said I took one half of the 6mg before dinner last nightand didn't get the diahrea but when I woke up this AM to go to bathroom the whole room was spinning and I could not walk for about 5 minutes, After got back to bed and laid there and decided I better unlock door in case something bad was going on and I would have to call 911, same thing, room spinning, the sweats, etc. This happened about 4 times. Stomach was a little upset but no nausea. I took some Pepto and went back to bed till 11:00. Still am constipated but will deal with that but I never want to go thru this AM again so Iwll deal with the constipation some other way besides Zelnorm.since that is the only thing I was taking it for basically since the IBS DA is working for me so well. Phew, what a morning. We do not have enough GI Docs in my town and I have already been unhappy with a couple. Basically happy with this one but just too darn many patients. At least he listens.

I'm guessing, Canyon, that you've been through the usual laxatives like prune juice and aloe vera pills and they don't help?

I am allergic to aloe skin products so never tried the juice. I like prunes though. The odd thing is that I was having no trouble at all when I started with the IBS symptoms of cramping, nausea, bloating, etc. I went almost every day and was better than I had been in years but once I started with all this other stuff the constipation started up. I think because I was having to take Pepto, gas pills, etc and just in general stomach upset all the time. Most of that has stopped now and I think I just have to get back to some sort of natural rythnm. I had all the tests and nothing showed up so they said IBS but like most of us feel there was something else going on. Will try prunes. I go a little but not like I should or was. I think something totally unbalanced my stomach and that part has been solved with the probiotics. Thanks for the suggestion. Raisins are not working.

Prunes should work for you.  Also, fiber, drinking lots of water and exercise.  My GI seems to be good but she's not all that personable.  Maybe those Stanford docs are snobs.  ???
Canyon, I work in Hayward... I could probably throw a rock at you.   tongue

Nooooooo, no rocks, please, I have enough trouble. Spent 5 hours in ER Sat with an eye problem, felt like I had something in it. A 4 hours wait in a waiting room for 20 with 40 people. felt like I was in a third world country. I have emphysema so I have to be really careful of colds, etc. It was a zoo and finally after 3 hours I said I had to leave as it was unhealthy for me to be there even though my eye was and is killing me so they said I could sit in the back with a couple other people and wait. Couldn't find anything in eye but a large scratch. Now I have Tylenol and codeine for pain and it is doing a number on me. Just not my week so NO ROCKS, MAYBE NEXT WEEK. ok? i did buy a small thing of Benefiber as it said soluble. don't feel like shopping at the moment since I can't see comfortably.
