I have a question.  After I eat, (doesnt matter what meal, my intestines randomly pick. sometimes its breakfast or lunch or snack or dinner. ) I get really really bad gassy cramps, the kind that feel like your intestines are flipping over.  Then, I break wind and then immediatly have to get to the bathroom, and have D.  Is that malabsorption, or does that sound more like gallbladdder? I've read about both things and they both kinda apply. Does malabsorption "come with" IBS? Im going to the gastro in two weeks (couldnt get me in any sooner...ughh..) but in the meantime im stressing out about everything. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Idk what i would do without you guys! :-)

I haven't heard of "malabsorption" as if it were a condition in and of itself. I know, though, that if your intestines empty out too fast, you will not absorb your food correctly and will sometimes discharge partially eaten food and can get vitamin and mineral deficiencies. But maybe malabsoption doesn't refer to intestinal dump rates but just the fact that you don't absorb the water that you're supposed to in order to make more solid stools?

A bad gall bladder will make you have to go right after a meal like that. I can't remember that my intestines felt fluttery, but I often cramped and hurt, especially up high. But different people react differently, so gassiness could be a symptom (I never could pass gas, even though I wanted to). And I think you have mentioned other symptoms before that pointed to you having a bad gall bladder. Make sure they do a hida scan on you and that you have it done when you are in the middle of a bad spell--you know, where everything you eat seems to give you diarrhea. If you have to, eat something that's sure to cause it to happen the night before the test. I think mine didn't show up bad the first two hida scans I had done because they were both done when I was doing okay.

I just googled it and it can be the cause of many things including the inability to absorb nutrients from the food. It does cause bloating, gas, bulky stools amont other things. It is a syndrome also which basically means it has a lot of different elements to it. If you "google" it you will see some good info. Lactose intolerance is considerd malabsorption as id celiac disease. So it is sort of an umbrella term for many things.

So what's supposed to be the differnence between IBS and malabsoption because celiac's disease and lactose intolerence are often lumped under "IBS" as well.

Just wondering if we're about to get a new buzzword.

Hi blondie,
If you suspect malabsorption you reallly need to tell your doc. I have always been told that malabsorption is when you are not getting your required nutrients in your food and yes it can be caused by your transit time. But are you sure you are pooping what you just ate? Can you identify most objects in your poop? (I know gross) but these are signs. Your doc can tell if you are not absorbing your nutrients by doing blood tests to see where your iron, b12, etc. levels are. You will also feel weaker than usual so let him know if you are having those problems.

Luckily, I'm not pooping out food...im pooping out yellowish, itty bitty little chunks. in nasty water. gross. sometimes my D is so yellow it looks like bright lemonade, or urine. Bleh! I am a little big anemic (says my gyencologist) but not enough to need to take iron supplements or anything. After I have D, I always get lightheaded...

I tend to think malabsorption is part of the syndrome of IBS or can cause it judging by the websites. I have heard of malabsorption for years. it is definetly not a new term. It stands to reason if things are passing too quickly that you might have trouble absorbing the nutrients thru the stomach, I think. The stuff in my stomach sits there for hours so I should be full of nutrients, instead I am full of you know what.

Lol, Canyon.

Blondie, I think you just have a bad gall bladder. Lord knows when mine was acting up I pooped daffodil-yellow water that set my butt on fire. That's the bile. I think when they act up like that, they release it all at once instead of in a controlled manner. Or they release it when they shouldn't. When they gave me the hida scan, I wasn't releasing my bile in the proper amounts when they simulated me eating. I think what causes the diarrhea is that it doesn't release it with your food, but it will release it afterwards, when there is nothing to absorb it. And when I had my bad pain attacks, I think that's when it was spasaming and releasing all the bile all at once because about 20-30 minutes after I started hurting, boom, bile diarrhea. But I could have bile diarrhea without a full-blown attack too, so I think maybe it works both ways.

Yeah I'm pretty sure my gall bladders gone haywire...with it being very prominant in my family and all the bile crap. Ive never really had a bonafied "attack" just bouts of the icky yellow poop. Hopefully my G.I wont be pushy like he was last time..idk why Im going back he's a total jerk..but apparently the "best in our area" so..whatever.
