Hi,

This post is mainly for the women I'm afraid!!
Has anyone ever suffered from a rectovaginal fissure?????
I have one and its on the part of skin between the vagina and anus.  Sorry to be so graphic.  I'm worried as I have never heard of this or had one before.
Would appreciate some advice
Thanks, Victoria

If I am not mistaken, it is not unusual for women with Crohn's to develop ulcerations that go between the intestines and the vagina. I want to say I have heard of fissures that do that as well. It's certainly not surprising. As I read on one website, "with as close as things are down there, it's surprising that we don't have more problems than we do."

I know doctors and nurses will tell you to teach your girl children to wipe from front to back. My mother used to fuss on me because I do it from back to front--with the noticable exception that I wipe each, um, hole with separate bits of toilet paper. They say that wiping from back to front is a good way to get fecal matter into the vagina and give yourself a yeast infection or to get it into the urinary tract and get an infection there. Make sure you are careful when you wipe down there, especially with a fissure, that you don't contaminate yourself or you will have an even worse problem on top of the one you have!

Hi Victoria,
Is this on the outside? You might want to call your doc to see if he can write you a script for a cortocosteriod ointment. Fissures are similar to hemmies but they are somtimes harder to heal and they often "break open" everytime you wipe which I'm sure you are wiping many times a day. He may want you to come in but let him know because you don't want it infected. It could be a fistula as well as it makes a "crack" through your anus to your outside skin.

Keri,
I think you may be confusing a fissure with a fistula. Fissures happen in healthy people as well and are more in the same family as a hemmhroid. Fistulas are caused by strictures or adhesions usually caused by surgery and causes organs to "connect" (and your right, commonly vagina and colon). These can be serious and need to be immediatly brought to your doctors attention.

Hi Victoria,
It sounds like a fissure to me but your doctor would be able to tell for sure. Good luck at your appointment.
Take Care
