Hey  there,
Just wondering if anyone has been on this drink, long term...as I have read on web that you cannot stay on it long term.....I can see why, it changes the way your body is dealing with IE:(excess bile salts, and diarrhea) My GI has put me on this and chauked me to having IBS, after there were many tests showing thickening and inflammation....go figure, anyway I need to know about personal experiences with this drink???? Thank you

Is this the generic for Questran, which is a cholesterol medicine? If so, I am on a similar medicine, Welchol, and I was never told I couldn't be on it forever. In fact, I've been on it almost three years and seem to be doing fine. I couldn't cope without it.

Are you saying that you had inflammation in your intestines? While some excess bile can cause that (it is an acid, after all), most inflammation is cause by something that's not IBS-related--like UC, Crohn's, or various types of colitis. If you did have thickening and inflammation, you may want to seek a second opinion.

Keriamon,
I am thinking that I will get a second opinion as yah, I have showed on many occassions on cat scans and colonscopies and even the capsule that there is thickening and inflammation of different areas, and it moves....There was thickening and inflammation in the termial ilieum and GI thought for sure he would find CD there, as I am also deficient in B12 ,which happens when that area is not working right, from what I am told...I am just so tired of all the tests and just want someone to figure it out...Gi wants to see me in OCtober, for a follow up, but I don;'t know why, cause nothing will change ..If I drink this stuff everyday then heck I will be soooo constipated, if I stop ( which I did when one of my twin girls was in hosptial for 3 and half days), oh did I have pain and big time diarrhea, I had to go to the bathroom 3 times while trying to get out of the hospital to take my daughter home, yah sounds like all is well hey????
I am just so tired and confused at this point,,,from what I know that thickening and inflammation does not occur in IBS,but does in IBD....and at first GI said that I had Crohn;'s/Colitis....Now IBS....Go figure hey?????

Thanks again
Cyndi

Hey Cyndi,

I've been on cholestyramine.  I thought it wasn't bad, and it helped with the diarrhea more than a lot of other remedies did.  If you find it constipates you, try halving the dose.  I haven't taken it long-term, however, so I'm not sure about it's long-term effects.

Hi Sarita,
Thank you for the response....How long were/have you been on it???? It has been I guess 2 months now for me, and I have been drinking it now every other night...And the worst of it is I am still straining to go,which doesn't help the prolapse and when I do go, it is round balls, so to speak....Did you start with sever diarrhea?? And did you bind up???
Thanks again

I was having watery diarrhea from 5-25x/day when I started on it, and only took it on the bad days (I considered anything over 10 times to be a bad day).  I took it almost like someone would take Imodium: only as needed.  It didn't constipate me; it just helped me go from 10 a day to something like 3 or 4 a day, but I still had diarrhea.  Kind of weird.  I was also taking stuff like dicyclomine, Lomotil, even hydrocodone - anything that had a constipating effect.  Nothing seemed to do the trick consistently.  I stopped everything altogether at one point and went on a "natural" course - a combination of calcium citrate, Citrucel, an Omega 3-6-9 supplement, acidophilus.  Then I stopped that, too.  Finally got on an anti-parasitic drug, Flagyl, and that, more than anything, helped the diarrhea for several months.  It made me feel like crap for 2 weeks - nausea, dizziness, etc. - but the end result was definitely worth it.  The big D is starting to come back, though, so who knows what kind of fun stuff I'll be trying next!  Might ask for another course of Flagyl...

Ultimately, nothing has ever constipated me, except the drugs they gave me after gallbladder surgery...I didn't go for two days (unheard of for me!) and was pretty miserable.  Have you tried decreasing your dose of the cholestyramine?

Hi there Sarita,
Thank you for your response..
I have been kind of taking it as needed as well...but there is no happy medium here for me, while on it my stools turn into litle balls and well I guess because I have a rectal prolapse it makes it worse, cause it was I guess easier to pass diarrjea then almost hard balls....So I guess when I go to see the surgeon again on Aug 12th, he is waiting to see how the diarrhea turned out, before we did the corrective surgery for the prolapse...Guess I will be having that one.....
Anyway thanks again and I will keep ya posted
I too have diarrhea at least up to 15 times a day and sometimes more and sometimes (rare tho) less..
