Hey, I'm really new around here so I'm sorry if this has been posted a lot. I tried to do a search first to see what I could find.

I am supposed to start zelnorm this week but I do not have constipation usually. I have tons of bloating and cramping at night but I do go to the bathroom first thing in the morning. I'm wondering if this medicine will help then? I used to wear a size 0 in jeans and I am now in a 9 because of all the bloating and weight gain I've had from IBS so I really want a med that will help with that!

So I'm wondering what people's reactions are to it and if it will make me sick because I'm not constipated. Thanks everyone!!

It's my understanding that Zelnorm is only given to people who have constipation that does not respond to traditional laxatives. I was under the impression that Zelnorm was a very strong laxative. Which, I would think, would be bad for anyone who's not constipated.

But wait and see what you hear from people who have been on it.

I was on Zelnorm for months. Not because I didn't respond to laxatives or because I was SUPER constipated, but because my guts wouldn't regulate. I wouldn't go for a few days and then when I did go I'd have D. My doc said Zelnorm would make things flow regularly and stop the C and D. It did.
BUT, I can't imagine anyone being prescribed Zelnorm who's not constipated at all. If you're pooping everyday you should not be taking Zelnorm. Especially because lots of people get major D at first with it. Sometimes your body will adjust and go to normal, sometimes you don't adjust and have to stop the med, other times you're having a reaction to it and should stop immediately. Either way, I would get a 2nd opinion.
Please keep us posted with updates and what you decide.

Thanks for both of your input/help! I did take it today and it is upsetting my stomach but I've heard that it does that. I don't exactly have constipation but when I do have to go to the bathroom my body takes about 8-9 hours before I can actually go and there is a lot of cramping and bloating, if that makes sense. I go to the bathroom once a day but it takes longer than it should and I am up all night with bloating and pain. Sometimes it get IBS D and other days no.

So I'm trying it for a few days to see what happens since we already payed the $250 for it. My gastroenterologist is supposed to be in the top ten out there so I'm willing to try it but I have heard it should only be used with IBS C too. I really hope it gives me some relief at night though! I am so bloated in the morning and I start school next week so I need to some how change that!

Be aware that Zelnorm (aka tegaserod) can cause extra bloating for the first week or so.  Same goes for the nausea and cramping.  I also got headaches for the first few days.

Please take all the precautions (pulled from Yahoo Health):

  • Stop taking tegaserod and contact your doctor if you experience new or increased stomach pain or blood in your stool.
  • If severe diarrhea, or diarrhea together with bad cramping, abdominal pain, lightheadedness, fainting, or dizziness develops, stop taking tegaserod and contact your doctor.  (Diarrhea is an occasional side effect of tegaserod. Most often, diarrhea has been reported during the first week of starting tegaserod. Typically, diarrhea diminishes with continued therapy.)
  • It is not known if tegaserod will increase the risk of abdominal surgery. If you suddenly get different or worse abdominal pain, contact your doctor.

Please Note: There have been rare cases of rectal bleeding and severe abdominal pain in patients treated with Zelnorm. Some of these problems were related to insufficient blood flow to part of the bowel. It is not known if this was related to Zelnorm use.

Let us know how it goes.  Good luck!

Zelnorm cramped me up so bad and gave me such bad diahrea the first time Itook it so I cut it in half the second day. He only had me taking one a day as it was. The second day I was so dizzy I could not get out of bed for hours cause Icould not walk. I have some constipation but sure not enough to take that. It is too bad that you did not know that you can get some Zelnorm free from their website. Your Dr. has to write a prescription but they give you about 10 to try with no charge. In my case my Dr. gave me samples and I was sure glad he did. Just a heads up for everyone. If you get prescribed something and you can't get samples and have to pay out of pocket check the website for the drug. There are just oodles of free trial coupons for most drugs expecially new ones. Sleep drugs. You still have to have a seperate prescription for what ever the free trial calls for but better that than buying something you can't use. I know I drive my Dr. nuts with these things but it is my money and I have enough stuff around that didn't work or didn't agree with me. Usually he just gives me samples as I think he has an aversion to prescription pads.

It did make me very sick yesterday but it hasn't done anything today so far. Even if you are bloated for the first week or so does it seem to help with bloating after that? That's probably my worse symptom and I do everythingI can to stop it like running, drinking water, having normal BM at night or/and in the morning.

Ya, I think it did help me with the bloating. It keeps things moving along, sort of like easing the pressure, so the bloat becomes less.
Keep us posted on your progress. :-)

Glad to hear that it does help with bloating. Any idea how long it takes for your system to regulate and the bloating to go down (well I guess just how long it takes to notice if the med is making a difference)? Like I said, it would be nice to have some progress this week. I have to be at an event Wed. morning and I'm so bloated and sick in the mornings usually!

Sorry to say but I don't think you'd see any results for a couple weeks. When I started taking probiotics I was bloated and gassy for a good 7-10 days before it settled down. When I started taking Digestive Advantage I didn't see any results for about 10 days either.
Maybe you could load up on Gas-X (or the like) for your Wed event.
Good luck!

I just started taking Zelnorm on Saturday. I have always had bloating and stomach cramps for as long as I can remember and just tried to live with it. I was so happy to try something out to help get everything on track. Hopefully we both have good luck with it, kgrl17!!

This is indeed a blessing to speak to others who are suffering from constipation.  When you mention the word, most folks turn their noses up.  Zelnorm is a miracle drug for me as I didn't go sometimes for one month, imagine the pain and bloating that was associated.  I would recommend Zelnorm to anyone who suffers from IBS.  I spent 10 years trying to find out what was wrong, my colonoscopies were normal and my doc couldn't figure anything out. He said we would try Zelnorm and see how it works and my God, it did and I've been on it since.  I hae also changed my diet since April when I was hospitalized for 6 days with severe symptoms.  This condition is not to be played with and if you have issues, please contact your doctor or Jesus and ask for some help.  I pray a lot and eat differently and have had minimal symptoms.  The ony time I have problems is when I don't eat enought fiber and I can't take OTC products, so I increase the fruit intake and that helps.

To all of you who are suffering, I will be praying for your relief.

For those of you that had good results with Zelnorm, how long did it take for it to begin regulating you?
