Hi everyone, I am usually found on the lupus forum but was hoping for a litttle help. I have been really unwell lately. I have lupus but almost sure my symptoms aren't lupus related. I have chronic constant constipation (for about a year now). I have been told that the muscle at the bttom of the colon isn't working correctly. I have had several urine infections over the last 3-4 months and I'm recovering from a kidney infection. My WBC has been elevated for about 6 weeks, the latest result is 30. Does anyone know if chronic constipation can affect the kidneys and the blood results? I can go up to 2 weeks without a bm. I get severe pain and quite often have to make myself have a bm. I sweat terribly from head to foot, can't move for the pain and feel incredibly sick. I get really bloated, and feel like under my ribs is swollen. Any ideas would be really great. Thanks

Did your doctor tell you that you have pelvic floor dysfunction?  That can cause chronic constipation and pain.  How often do you have a BM?  What's your diet like?  Have you tried keeping a meticulous food diary to show to your physician?

Your lupus can affect your white count, as can any infection, such as your kidney infection; do you have your complete blood count report?

Hi, thanks for bumping this back up lil.

Sarita, I had a test done which showed both the internal and external anal muscles weren't functioning correctly. Think it was called a defecating proctogram. i usually go about 2 weeks inbetween bms. My diet is reasonably good. i haven't found any foods which make things worse or better. My white cell count has been raised (and getting higher everytime i have it done) for quite a long time, long before my kidney infection. i don't have a copy of the last results where the wbc was 30, but do have the one two weeks previous. They are: (sorry, it's a long list)

WBC 22.6                                                                    RBC4.18                                                                                 Platelets 373                                                                       HB 14.2                                                                             ESR 4                                                                               Neutrophils 90.27%, 20.4                                                       Monocyte 0.35                                                               Eosonophils 0.03                                                              Basophil 0.03                                                                  PCV 0.419                                                                Lymphocyte 1.85                                                           MCH 32.4                                                                       MCV 95.7

I'm just so totally fed up with everything right now. Don't know whether the lupus is causing problems or the constipation is or both or neither! I'm in constant pain, terrible backache, nauseaus, constant urine infections etc etc. Thanks for taking the time to respond and any ideas would be gratefully received, Catherine

While bacterial overgrowth in the gut is usually accompanied by diarrhea, I think it can sometimes manifest as constipation too. For a person without lupus, I would suggest a breathalyzer test for bacterial overgrowth because infections of the urinary tract, vagina and mouth (thrush) often point to a bacterial problem somewhere else in the gut. Of course your lupus might be causing all of these things, but you never can tell; you may want to try it. They treat it with one or more rounds of antibiotics (it can be hard to get rid of).
