I was diagnosed with IBS last year after a colonoscopy and endoscopy revealed only non specific inflammation in my cecum. Does anyone have really really smelly frequent gas with a lot of cramps? Is this part of the IBS? Any treatments? It's really embarassing!

Hi Julia,
Do you eat a lot of fruits and veggies? Some are really tough to digest because they create a lot of gas. Beans too. Have you ever tried taking Beano before a meal or Gas-X after a meal? Both seem to be pretty effective. The smell might come from bad bacteria or yeast that has taken over your intestines. Have you been tested for Candida or H. Pylori or bacterial overgrowth? Smelly gas can also be attributed to Lactose Intolerance and Celiacs. Have you been scoped or tested for any of these?
You can try taking peppermint pills, Beano, Gas-X and even Charcoal pills. Probiotics will help with the gas, bloating and smell as well, if taken regularly for more than a couple weeks. Probiotics especially help with yeast or bacterial overgrowth.

I do eat fruits and vegetables but never used to have this problem. I don't eat beans. I do eat yogurt everyday with acidolphulus which would help prevent bacterial/yeast overgrowth. I'm going to see my doc next week and will ask for an H pylori test and a TTG IGA (for Celiac) screen. I already went through an endoscopy last year and she didn't see damaged villi. There isn't a lab test for lactose is there? I used to be lactose intolerant but it would make me very nauseous. Now... I have frequent bowel movements up to 10 times a day but they are still formed but very very smelly with abdominal pain.

I, too, have terible gas!  It is uncomfortable, can come on at any time and sometimes will last (one burst every 5 min. or so with a big pre-cramp) for up to an hour or more.  It has caused social embarrassment and I actually have anxiety attacks in some situations when I think it's starting.  I have to sit through long meetings and become anxious prior just wondering what could happen.  And the smell!  Oh My God!  Sometimes I can't stand myself.  I have had IBS for years off/on with mostly D or lots of urgency but I now take Citricil nightly and my stools are formed more than not.  I have tried the Digestrol route with no help.  I have tried Activa yogurt (1 a day - half at morn. & half p.m. d/t lactose intolerance) and have tried probiotic pearls but they gave me profuse D.  I am becoming socially isolated and uncomfortable in most situations.  I just turned 50 and my GP has said this is the time for a colonoscopy and to see a GI doc who will check things out but he says it's most likely related to IBS which I've suffered from for years.  The horrible gas though is something that has worsened in the past years and now this is my biggest concern.  Anyone have any thoughts?

There are other things in dairy that can cause problems esides lactose. It is a big producer of acid which can do all kinds of things to the stomach. The only way to really know is to go without dairy for a couple weeks and see. I have suggested this to numerous friends that started with problems and said they were never lactose intolerant and it made an amazing difference in how they felt. It is not that hard to do and it won't take long to know if that is one of the problems.s IBS should never be diagnosed unless everything else is ruled out. Get the colonsoscopy and see a GI Dr. Probably long overdue.

Thanks for the response.  I appreciate any help....although we have a long history of lactose intolerance on my mother's side of the family.  I have known I have that since I was around 14 and I have cut out milk, cream in any form, even cream soup & ice cream, cheese, etc. That is why I am trying only a 1/2 carton of Activa at a time, morning & evening.  Even yogurt bothers me.  So I don't think dairy is the problem because I am very careful with that.  I was diagnosed with IBS after extensive testing back in my early 20's when they could find nothing really wrong.  I will be going through it all again soon.  I take a lot of vitamins.  I have read about magnesium causing problems and calcium carbonate helping.  I am a long time calciumcarbonate taker but mixed with multi vitamins and many other vitamins.  Right now, I am cutting all out for a while and then I plan to try the Caltrate 600 Purple. See what that does?  I hope there is someone out there that may have the answer or help with the gas problem????

10 months ago my body was fine, since 9 months ago I have had gas as my number one symptom, and then bloating, cramps. It has caused me too to feel totally isolated and left out of life. I can't go anywhere anymore because the more embarrasing experiences I have about gas the more anxiety I get which just brings it on. I wish I had some help but still looking myself. I eat no dairy at all, and I know I am not digesting ANY type of foods, nothing is okay. I have been taking regular amounts of probiotics, digestive enzymes, glutamine, fiber, and all sorts of intestinal healers for months now woth no reduction in gas or improvements at all. Done all the testing, don't know what else to do. Tried EVERYTHING you can imagine. There has to be something that will heal..

Does anyone have any help for us gas sufferers? Is it possibly another condition altogether? I was through the tests years ago and they DX's IBS. Using Citricil for years and it pretty well controlled the D for for the most part for yers but in the lat 5 years, the gas has been the main problem. I still use Citricil every night faithfully. I know I have tried been a long-standing Vit. D user, have been on Digeserol faithfully for their six month suggestion, and currently on Probiotic Pearls for several weeks, am lactose inoleerant for years so stear clear of all milk products although. I've even been eating Activa (1/2 carton a.m. & 1/2 p.m. at a time so as not to push the dairy too much), have tried Beano. GasX gave me profuse D. I am at a loss??? Some days I'm OK but some days, it is so bad and terribly embarrasing and lasts on/off all day through the night. My life has become a nightmare and social life...none... and here it is Christmas and I can't go to dinner parties or even a movie! We need some suggestions and help here...anyone???? Please!
