Just wondered if anyone had any insight into what might be wrong with me. I have been unwell with bowel problems for about 2 years. I have constant constipation, quite often going up to 2 weeks with no motion. I suffer from terrible cold clammy sweats. I have serious backache, the physio thinks it's coming from the sacral joint. I had a defecating proctogram done which showed the inner and outer anal muscles weren't working correctly. I also had an abnormal colon transit test, it showed very slow transit and also indications of an obstruction in the right hand side(which hasn't been followed up on) I get serious stomach pains (and pains in my bottom cheeks also). I struggle to go the toilet and often have to insert a finger to help me. This might or might not help. My stools are accompanied with a lot of gas and I am often full of gas. The stools are often very thin with like a flat edge on one side. The pain is often debilitating, I am unable to move for hours at a time. The pain worsens if i sit on the back of my bum or if i walk (everytime my foot hits the floor) I just don't know what to do now. I've been taking movocol but with very little success. I seem to be getting fobbed off by the gastro doctor and have requested a second opinion. I have an appt on Jan 9th. On monday of this week I was really ill and ended up in casualty after vomiting up poo. Sorry for being so graphic. They thought I'd had a blockage but it had cleared. My WBC has also been raised for months (it's in the 20's)  Does any of this sound like IBS or other bowel diseases any of you know about. I'm at the end of my tether now. I have lupus but been told by lupus doc this isn't connected. Many thanks

It doesn't sound like IBS but rather some much more significant problems. If there is some obstruction why hasn't something been done. I think you are doing to have to make some real noise. It doesn't sound like you are in the US so it is hard to know how to guide someone but am glad you have appt. Hopefully someone else will have a better answer for you. I hope you get help soon as it sounds terrible.

I agree; you need to get that obstruction looked at and, hopefully, taken care of. In the meantime, has anyone advised you of laxatives to take? Since you have an obstruction, I would think that you need to have soft, watery stools in order to keep things moving past that blockage. Vomiting while constipated is a sign of a blockage (if if can't go down, it will go up). To use chemical laxatives heavily, you should be under a doctor's care, but you might try drinking loads of prune juice and taking aloe vera capsules to try and soften up your movements enough that they can come out.

It may be that, even after you get the blockage or obstruction removed, you will still have constipation problems due to slow transit times and weak muscles. I don't know that there's anything they can do for those, but maybe a combination of high fiber and the prune juice and aloe vera pills will be enough to keep your stools soft enough to pass.

Thanks very much Canyonbabe and Keriamom for your replies. I'm really concerned about this. I think theyv'e fobbed me off for too long. I didn't think this sounded like IBS but figured someone in here would know. I am not going to be fobbed off any longer and this new doctor I'm seeing in January had better do something or I'll not be happy. I have been advised to stop the laxatives (movocol) and I have enemas from my doctor instead if I go longer than 2 weeks. The motions I pass are always soft, a bit mushy, which also has them baffled as they expect someone with constipation to have hard stools. Thanks again and will let you know how my appt goes. (if your in the uk you may here my ranting if he doesn't help me!!) Wishing you both a lovely christmas. x x
