I can't swear your situation (since I'm allergic to penicillin and never take it), but I have, in the past, taken probiotics while being on antibiotics. It's the only way I can keep from having diarrhea while being on them. Some people have heard that probiotics diminish the impact of the antibiotics, and that you should wait until after you're done with the antibiotics to take the probiotics, but I read about a study in which people in hospitals were given probiotics while being on antibiotic regimens to see if it reduced their antibiotic-associated diarrhea during and after treatment (it did). Some people recommend you take your antibiotic at one time of day and your probiotic at another to keep them from battling against each other, but the new antiobitics that are out now (that I've been put on) get into your system and work for like a week after you stop taking them, so I don't think taking your probiotics at any particular time helps or hinders in any way, since they're long-acting antibiotics anyways.

My rule of thumb is to take probiotics either right before bed (because they make me gassy), or to take them when I take my antibiotic just so I'll remember to take them. That would be my advice to you.

The Culturelle really does help keep me from getting diarrhea when I'm on antibiotics, but it's a bit too strong for my guts; it gives me kind of bad gas pains. That's why I take before bed; that way I sleep through the worst of it and only have some lingering gas cramps in the morning. Acidopillus doesn't seem to bother me anymore, so I can take it pretty much anytime. I've been taking a pill a day, plus eating the Activia yogurt and drinking acidophillus milk and I seem to have finally gotten myself straightened back out after that last antibiotic round (I have been sicker since moving to this city than I have ever been my whole life). But you better believe I'm going to continue to make those three things a regular part of my diet from now on.

I believe it depends on the type of probiotic you're taking as to whether it'll cause gas or not, the one I take does NOT cause me any gas, it has no sugar/artificial sweetners in it or a bunch of other junk like food colorings and additives, mine contains only a little potato starch for preservation...ones that contain only a little potato starch or rice starch are best...when taking antibiotics you should be sure to take the probiotics at least 2 hours AFTER taking your antibiotics otherwise it's a waste, since antibiotics kill everything...I'm not sure about penicillan but I would follow the same rule of thumb, taking it at least 2 hours AFTER.

Google the type of probiotic you're taking and put the word "ingrediants" beside it to find out what all is actually in it...for example, "rimadophilus reuteri ingrediants"...I know that Digestive Advantage has sugar and sugar alcohols in it (a big no no for IBDers and IBSers) along with other preservatives and food colorings.

I think the DA that you swallow does not have either sugar or sugar alcohol. I did see it in the chewables but did not see it in the ones you swallow.
