Hi there, I posted the constipation and bloating post and I am normally on the GERD forum.  But for the past few months I've had terrible constipation and may have a conditon called gastroparesis.  I am very slow to eliminate!!

I have been considering getting an enema this week, rather than wait for my GI visit on the 22nd.  I may absolutely have an emergency.

Are enemas the same as colon cleansing?  I have no idea...Are they painful?  Are they healthy?  Thanks in advance! friendlygal

An enema like you would buy at a pharmacy will clear out the lower part of the colon. Colon cleanse products blow out everything. For myself, I'm not a fan of such products since you lose so much "good bacteria" in the process. Some of those "cleansing" products contain bentonite, which won't hurt you, but causes some fairly spectacular results in the toilet - intended to convince unsuspecting people that they have a problem and fool them into buying more product. You can achieve a complete colon emptying by using over-the-counter products, if you really think it's necessary: magnesium citrate, Fleet's phospha soda, etc. Maybe someone will come along with more info, but it's my understanding that gastroparesis refers to stomach emptying only - not intestinal motility. I understand your desperation. :-)

Hi friendly Gal,
I read your post and it's bizarre as I've got a practice nurse coming today to administer an enema at my home. I've tried the water based enemas from the pharmacy but sometimes if the constipations too severe these just don't do it. Jens right, these kind of enemas only really help the lower colon, not the rest. In some cases this is enough to get the bowel moving and if it does there's no real harm in using them, although I personlly wouldn't like to use them as the only evacuation method. I'm getting a long tube enema from the nurse and this should do the trick for now. I find these VERY painful when theyr'e working to remove the faeces and it can take a good 2-3 ours for the effects to finish. I'm not too sure about the colon cleanse products though, sorry. Hope someone else has more info. I too understand your desperation, it truly is an awful situation to be in, you often feel like, "how much more can my bowel hold without bursting!!" Good luck

Colon cleansing products--even the ones that doctors prescribe for colonoscopies--can be pretty painful for people with a lot of constipation because you'll end up with hard stool impacted down low in the colon, and then all this soft stool will build up behind it and be trying to push it out. If you feel the need to flush yourself all the way out periodically (some people with chronic constipation will plan a cleansing around when they need to do something and don't want to be suffering from constipation all the time--like a wedding or vacation), you need to start with a small amount of laxatives and work your way up. Someone on here who was bad C all the time took, I think it was, three days to take all of her laxatives prior to a colonoscopy because her doctor said taking them like for a regular person would be too miserable for her. You might start with an enema to get the lower part moving a bit, then start with the laxative to try and push stuff through from the top down. Unfortunately, motility problems are hard to overcome, even with laxatives, because it's not a stool moisture problem, but it just not moving.

I think that my urge to always go yet never be able to is constipation.  But I also think that I may have gastroparesis and that this is something else, a motility problem.

I'll try to wait until the 22nd for my appointment with the nurse practitioner at a GI office but I just don't know if I can.  It'll just be a consultation and then I'll have to wait further for a test to be done to see if I have gastroparesis.  We haven't even set up an appointment for testing...(sigh)...

Wow, enemas sound gross and no fun at all.  If they are painful then I wouldn't want that!  Maybe if I exercise more than I will be able to help this motilityconstipation problem?  I know I haven't been exercising lately!

Friendlygal,
Like what's been mentioned before... Maybe you could start with an over the counter laxative. Or even the Fleet phosphosoda. I used the Fleet to prep for the scope and it cleaned me out good. You probably don't even need to drink the entire dosage either (6 bottles) - maybe 1/2 would be enough to get things moving for you.
Good luck!

Several people on here say that exercise helps their constipation a lot; to the point that they can't go unless they do a lot of walking or running. Walking or running seems to be the best for getting the colon to move, but yoga seems to be best for getting gas out; something about all those stretches and postures helps work the gas out! A combination of both certainly wouldn't hurt.

oh, i mean that i'm gonna try to just eat the right foods and exercise and hope to create bowel in that way.  i might not be able to do that, but i'd rather do it than have an enema.  I'll try to hang in there until my GI visit!
