I have quite a bloated stomach and none of my clothes fit me anymore.  I have had blood tests and a stool sample taken by the doctor.  All came bck clear.
I go to the toilet between 4 and up to 9 times a day.  If I eat, within ten or fifteen minutes, I am in the loo doing number twos.
I hate to be blunt, but they are not firm but they are not exactly liquid.  Just loose.
I went to a naturapath recently and she said I may have IBS and to abstain from all dairy and carbs and gave me Probex to take which is supposedly a high dose of lactobacillus plantarum.
None of this has helped.  Has anyone got any suggestions for me?

Hi franc and welcome to Healing Well,

I for one believe that everyone that has IBS (C or D) should at least try a fiber regimen. I have to say that it has made my life so much bearable and it seems like I have more control of my bowels now. There are people here that also take calcium carbonate for loose stools with good results. I hope you try a few to see what works, unfortunately everyone is different so it sometimes ends up in a whole lot of trial and error.

No, it will firm things up. It is used strangley enough for constipation and diahrea and seems to work very well. Salad and veggies give me diahrea, Different type of fiber and are very hard for people with IBS to digest so that may be part of your problem. Also stay away from fresh fruit for awhile along with the dairy. As for the carbs I have never heard to refrain from them.

If you do decide to go with the fiber, make sure to start slow and work your way up gradually. Many people get turned off by fiber because they just go for it however your body needs to adjust.

And drink plenty of water with it (fibre supplement)...you should also know that taking fibre supplements (as my GI suggested I do) can also cause extra bloating and gas, but stick with it, this is normal and once your system adjusts it will all go away, it did for me (it took 3 months but was well worth it!!!)...and find another probiotic to take (try primadophilus reuteri made by natures way if you can get ahold of it) IBSers are prone to bacterial overgrowth and need it to bring balance of bacteria in the gut flora....trust me.

No, but I am going to the doctors again today so I will see what she has to say.
Off to a funeral now of a very dear friend, ten years younger than me. Only thirty two. Hope I can keep it all together, including my bowls.

The only way to be 100% sure you have IBS is a colonoscopy.

I don't know if the test is available in the UK, but in the US there is a breathalyzer test that tests your breath for the wrong sorts of gas expulsions. That indicates you have a bad bacteria problem, which is common in people with a bad gas problem and D (although C can be caused by it too). If your doctor has heard of this test, get it. If not, you can go ahead and try treating like you do have bad bacteria (if your doctor is willing to work with you). The standard treatment for bad bacteria is a round of strong antibiotics in conjunction with (and followed by for some weeks) strong probiotics. Often it take multiple rounds of this to get rid of all of it, so if you get better for a while, then it comes back, try again.
