Hi everyone,
I think I might have asked this in the past, but I totally forget and can't find anything on the search.  So forgive me if I'm repeating.
I was on Toprol XL for high blood pressure for over 5 years.  I really felt that my high BP was caused by my horrible hormone fluctuations from perimenopause.  So after having my BP controlled for all that time, I decided to come down off it (with the consent of my doc).  I weaned off it VERY slowly over several months, and even then I had a pounding heart for 2 months after I was completely off it (rebound effects).  Anyhow......a week or 2 after being totally off it, I began to feel alot of pains here and there all over........but  mostly in my GI tract.   Some are aches, some are shooting pains, some are cramps.  They've been going on for about 2 months now.  I'm wondering if I have too many beta adrenergic receptors in my GI tract, and they were kept quiet by the beta blocker?  And now that I'm off it, they're screaming!
I can't find any specific info on this possibility, although I do know we have beta adrenergic receptors all throughout our bodies.
I was wondering if any of you ever stopped a beta blocker, and began to have more GI pain??   Thanks!

Cathy,

I'm sorry that no one here had any experience and was not able to comment on this... were you able to get some information on it?

Thanks Des, for caring that nobody answered this!

No, I haven't really found any info anywhere.  But I'm really feeling like the Toprol was controlling alot more than just my BP and heartrate.  I've been off it for 3 months now, and have ALOT more aches and pains.

I'm going to the doc's next week for this abdominal pain, and I'll ask him if he knows of any other connections.  Doctors don't always seem to know very much though, if its not what they've been taught in med school.

My headaches have come back too, unfortunately, so I think I'm going to need to consider going back on the drug.  It made me eat 24/7, so hopefully I can find a lower dose that controls my pains, but doesn't make me even fatter!

I am convinced that my body is wired really weirdly.  So maybe it works for lots of symptoms for me, when it doesn't for anyone else.

  Thanks for your concern! :)

I hope your doc can at least give you some answers... maybe ask if any of his other patients have noticed this too.

I know that someone (Canyonbabe?) posted a website before on testimonials from people that are taking medications (I think you can just search the medication name). I'll see if I can find it and maybe you can see what other people have experienced with the medication. I'll get back to you on that.
