My cousin 76 has had severe intestinal problems all his life. he has been diagnosed with Crohn's , then not with crohn's, had surgery years ago for Ileitis (sp) anyway a total mess since in his 20's. Has had every test known to man many times over and they still just don't know why everything goes thru him.He has consistently lost weight and now weighs only 107 or did until a month ago when a new Doctor put him on Welchol and Omega 3. He has put on 6 pounds so is now up to 113. I know he has been on Metamucil for years even though he has had Drs tell him it was not good for him but it cut down on his trips to john. I am only putting this out there because I have never heard of the Omega-3 as something for the stomach and since it is pretty harmless thought I would pass it along. He doesn't know and didn't ask the reason for it. He has managed to be active and not sickly in any way most his life which I can't figure out with this weight loss. Hopefully this will put some weight back on him. Anyone heard of Omega 3 for intestinal problems?

Thanks Canyonbabe for the info. No, I haven't heard of Omega 3 for the gut but anything that works is good to know. Of course everything should be run through your doctor but it sounds like its something worth mentioning. Its always good to hear of something that helped someone and that may help others with their quality of life also.

With all the problem he has had since the 50's you would think he would ask more questions. Unfortunately his wife wasn't home or maybe she would have known. I would think that Omega-3(fish oil) would make you go more but whatever it doing it it is like a miracle. He still goes alot but he takes in a lot of calories in an effort to keep weight up over the years and has managed but it just wasn't doing it at all the last few years so this is really amazing. I think it may more have to do with his body being able to absorb nutrients better to keep the weight up. In searching I did find it had to do with absorption and they have been wondering if he had a malabsorption problem. I did find that they use Salmon oil(omega-3) for cats that have digestive problems, gas, bloating, etc. so maybe there is something to it. I am pretty sure he didn't go to a vet though I am sure he has felt like it at times with no answers all these years.

Omega-3's have been shown to reduce inflammation.  They are good for people with heart disease.  I take two caplets a day; doesn't help my diarrhea but the health benefits are pretty well-documented otherwise.

that is an antispasmotic and unfortunately doesn't work for everyone. You are really lucky you found help so soon and haven't had to go 50 years with this condition but at least it proves one can live with it.
