It sounds like you may be suffering from proctalgia fugax. Its very uncomfortable and I get it occasionally. Feels like knives, sorry but there is really no other way to describe. Sometimes it will come on so suddenly and I will have to lift my behind off my seat for a minute while the pain passes and it seems to really take my breath away at times. Antispasmodics sometimes can help with this condition and although you do not know really when these episodes will hit; they usually will come on a few times in the day so the sooner you can catch it the better.

Hope this helps a little... Take Care

I sometimes get a dull pain, tho not as regularly as you seem to. I was told it is internal hemeroids. It is very uncomfortable indeed and can be very painful. I would go and see a doctor tho, it may be something very simple and will set your mind at ease.

I get colon spasms, sometimes in the middle of the night I will wake up and feel like I have to go, but nothing happens, and the pain is unbearable. I just have to lay down and pray for it to go away, it's the worst pain ever. I deal with constipation, bloating, and excessive gas no matter what I eat. Right after I eat a meal these symptoms start. I went to wal-mart the other day, and found that they now carry Mirlax over the counter so I got some hoping it helps with my constipation.

I wish you all good health,

I sometimes get a pressure like pain in the rectum which is very uncomfortable. Have you spoken to your doctor about it?

Yeah, I have sorta a dull pain that feels like it rests right under the bottom of my spine and points inward towards the rectum. I thought it had something to do with literally sitting all day at work. If I consciously make an effort to sit up a bit straighter it lightens a bit but as soon as I slouch again, there it is.

Indigo has a point. It does sound a bit like internal hemmroids to me but its best to rule other things out. Next time you visit your doctor, I would mention it.

about 2 years ago I started suffering from a dull aching pain in my rear. It felt like I was bearing down all the time. When I would wake in the morning there was no pain but 10 minutes after waking up the bearing down and pressure on my pelvic floor was immense and would continue all day unless I lay down. This lasted for about 4 weeks in total. At one point it was 8 days before I went to the toilet, I would feel so constipated but nothing would work, even a pessary from the doctor didn't help.

I do wonder what was wrong and i've never had any answers, except for when they did a laparoscopy they found a couple of lesions on my bowel on the right side.

indersonu,  Hello,  you said you have IBS because of taking nexium..  Have you tried anything else besides nexium??  Just a question..  I have had IBS for 15 years and it was not from taking any drugs it is just my system..  If I had a drug causing me IBS..  I surely would try not to take it.. But I do understand if you have to...

Indersonu, I don't understand about the Nexium. You don't still take it do you? I go thru spells where I cannot take Nexium I found so switch to Tagamet or Prevacid. Best not to stay on the same one for a long time anyway. I would not put up with IBS to take a pill. I have a severe acid problem but actually I found Tagament working the best for me at this time. It decreases acid but does not turn it off completely. I believe you need more than the PPI"s allow.

questforhealing, If you have any issues with any members, please email me or 7Lil directly. I think that this bickering back and forth is getting out of hand. I have always prided this group (IBS forum) for the way we all handle ourselves here with respect and I will not let this turn into a negative experience for anyone, not on my watch.

You seem to be very vocal about your distrust in western medicine and I'm not going to say that I totally disagree with you but we have heard what you are saying and it is up to each individual member to agree or disagree. You seem to disagree with the majority of opinions here and are very vocal about it however when anyone questions you, you seem to feel attacked. Many of the people on this forum are willing to try anything to get better but are hesitant about people pushing too hard because of past experiences of spammers on this board.

We are a community here with many long time members that feel quite comfortable about coming here with questions and answers and I would like that to continue.

I've suffered from proctalgia fugax for about 8~9 years now.  I'm a 44 yo, male.  Like dbab stated, knives is a good description, while at times it feels as if a balloon is trying to be inflated.  After years, of just pacing the house, hoping that the pain will subside, so i could get back to sleep, I stumbled on a wierd remedy about a year ago.
I noted that I had a slight erection during one bout, and preceded to *********.  Upon orgasm, the pain instantly vanished.
I've since read other forums, where this has helped sufferers.  Oddly, many attribute an orgasm as to instigating an attack.
I can only assume that a quick redirection of blood flow from the rectal area, is what causes the bout to subside.  Hope this helps.  It's certainly much cheaper than a pharmaceutical remedy!!
NOTE: I noticed that the forum is text moderated.  My remedy was changed to a bunch of stars.  I assume you can read between the lines, as to what it is.  Wasn't trying to curse, or be profane.  Just trying to help.

Hi Everyone,

I get discommfort in the rectum also, sort of a feeling like you are full and to have a bowel movement. I also get those sharp pains on and off. I have been in a IBS flare for two weeks, started back on my metamucil nightly and still have that pressure feeling like I have to go. My IBs was pretty good for years and it is back, although I did not miss it.

This is interesting about the nexium because my husband has been on it for about 8 months and is having IBS symtons, c to d and the pressure feeling, He also does not feel like it is helping his acid reflux either any longer.

Hello
I sometimes suffer from short lived moderate to sever rectal pain . It usually happens at night,I wake up feeling a mild discomfort,as time passes (5 to 10 Min.) the sharp pains become increasingly more pernounced and uncomfortable ,only to subside as quick as they started. This happens on average , about ounce or twice a month .My doctor said,it is most likely caused by constipation, though I have no symptom before or after the fact.

OK. I have something significant to add to this discussion. I've had that deep anal pain off and on since high school. I'm male and now in my mid-40's, and I get it about once a month. I NEVER knew what it exactly was until about a half hour ago. Wow! It is definitely proctalgia fugax. It is the most excrutiating, toe-curling pain in your ass, and there isn't a darn thing you can do about it. Here's when I get it most frequently: If during a bowel movement, I really, really push too hard, I get it afterwards. It's bad. Here's the stranger one: I get it after a particularly intense ejaculation. Awkward to get this pain after sex. Awkward to say the least. It is the EXACT SAME PAIN I get after the pushing too hard during BM thing. It is like a knife is up my rectum. It lasts for anywhere from 5 minutes, to about 30. I also occasionally get it in the middle of the night, and it will wake me out of a sound sleep, it's that bad. It's the EXACT SAME PAIN in all three instances. Well, I'm relieved there's finally a name to it. Just wanted to share.

Finally someone who has experienced that middle of the night, what is stuck in my butt pain with the passing of nothing but the pain goes away and you forget about it until the next time it hits. I have never had gall stones or kidney stones but I was wondering if there was such a thing as butt stones that are trying to pass and don't. Tremendous pain that you think you are having a bad dream that won't go away for about 10 minutes. I have only had 3 in my life and I hope that the frequency does not increase!! No one ever talks about these things so you endure and it goes away. Glad I went looking for answers. At least I know it is something that others experience. I have never had IBS so it is not at all connected to that for me.

Hi CalifSunshine

Welcome to HW. This is quite an old thread going back to 2007. If you don't get many responses, I would suggest starting a new thread of your own in the forum.
Sometimes when you have googled a certain condition and it takes you to this site, you can be led to very old threads.

Hope you find the ste useful. I'm sure you will find many people here with the same symptoms to you.

I have had rectal pressure on and off for a few years now, and I think I finally found the solution, so there is hope, read on. Initially, when I first experienced discomfort and pressure about 3 years ago, I went to a proctologist, he said it was due to small internal hemorrhoids. I got laser treatments and after a few treatments, it went away, however, every 3-6 months my problem kept coming back. I would then have to go back to the proctologist for more treatments. about 6 months ago, I had to see the proctologist again, this time, he said there were no hemorrhoid, but he saw lots of mucus and he thought I have spastic colon (another name for IBS). He gave me some medication which did not help. All my life I have had mild form of IBS, lose stool and occasional diarrhea. I usually have 2-3 bowl movements each day, which lately has caused skin irritation and itching in the anus area due to cleaning and rubbing.

Next I went to an allergy specialist, she run all the tests and could not find anything. As I was researching the subject on the web, I cam across this posting, I also saw another posting, and someone recommended biofeedback. I started Googling biofeedback and found a psychologist in Dallas who specialized in it. I made an appointment and saw her 4 times the first week. I noticed the tool she uses is made by an organization called HeartMath which is a non-profit organization in California. I ordered the emWave2 and started using it on my laptop twice per day for 15-20 minutes. I also order some of their books on anxiety and stress and started reading them. Anxiety is something I have been fighting on and off for 15 years.

It has been 3 weeks now, and I can see a big difference. I no longer have diarrhea and now, I go 1 time per day, and pressure has been reduced significantly. I think my problem was mostly related to my nervous system and with Biofeedback; I am able to calm the nervous system and my digestive track. I am grateful for finding this tool. For those who do not want to spend the money to buy the emWave2, they have a lot of paid and free literature on the subject on their web site you could try first. I hope this help and good luck.
