Hey everyone!
I've been gone for awhile - I was pregnant and it totally cleared up my IBS-D since July!  I was in the states during my delivery (I had a beautiful baby Boy)  and for around 45 days after, then I returned to Bolivia and have basically refrained from eating out ANYWHERE because I don't want to get E-Coli/Shigella/C-Difficile EVER AGAIN!!!!!
Well, I decided to cut back on breastfeeding and have been scared that returning to my normal non-pregnant/nursing state would make the post infectious IBS come back.... and after one week of weaning I am starting to have a few urgent BM's and burning abdomen pain again.  My only consolation (this is so sad) is that my 4 year old also has similar symptoms!  Maybe we've eaten something contaminated?  I've been like this since Friday.  I really want to handle the IBS differently this time - I don't want to freak my self out and spend my life glued to the internet!  But I was SOOOOO happy to be IBS free for a while!!!!
While I was in the states it was suspected that my nephew has a genetic collogen disorder (Ehler's Danlos Syndrome) and the doctor said that anyone else in our family who has hypermobile joints (I am double jointed in my hands and feet pretty bad) probably also have this syndrome.  I have been on those boards and IBS is a pretty common theme there, as well.  Apparently people with this disorder don't heal quickly and make thick scars - so this explains why I didn't snap back from my intestinal infections like the other Americans that live down here did!  I just wanted to put this info out there in case anyone else has hypermobile joints and IBS!

Congratulations!!!

Wow, a baby boy!  Is your 4 yr old a boy too?  It’s nice to see you back, m&ms…. sorry you have to be here though.  We missed you, it had been quite a while.  Last I remember you were pregnant and heading to the states.  Glad you finally convinced hubby.

Have you checked with a doctor about your symptoms yet?  Are you continuing probiotics religiously?  If your child is having problems as well it might just be something you ate.  Even though you’re not eating out, maybe it is something in the water that doesn’t agree with you.

EDS is a new one for me, I have never heard of that disorder.  I will have to look it up now.  Did you look into this possibility for you?  Maybe your nephew’s doctor would be a good place to start.  confused Wish I had something better for you.  Nice to hear from you again!

You're used to all that testosterone, huh?  LOL  Good luck!  (Although I have heard boys are easier than girls -- not sure if that's true, I don't have kids.  tongue )

My fellow South American traveler!  Good to hear from you!  Sorry to hear about your guts acting up, though sad   I'll tell you, whenever I've traveled to remote places in Africa, South America, Middle East, whatever, I have gotten a few terrible bouts of diarrhea and pain.  Sometimes there's been an explanation for them, sometimes not.  Are you going to go the stool sample route again (how fun is THAT?)?  How long are you going to be there this time?  Maybe you should go see one of the natural healers in Bolivia - go out into the jungle and hang out for a while, HA!

CONGRATULATIONS on your new kidlet!  Ah, it must be cute to have babies...

May I ask where you live in Bolivia. I have a foster child in LaPaz and because of the altitude cannot travel there. I heard the conditions there are very bad, especially water contamination as I don't believe they have running water where they live. Thank you for letting us know about that disease. I have never heard of it but hope that they can find a resolution for you IBS for the two of you.

Canyonbabe-
I've been to La Paz and do not wish to go back(I live in Santa Cruz - it is tropical like Florida)! La Paz is beautiful to look at, but the altitude gives me a splitting headache and I lose my appetite and ability to sleep there! The water is horrible throughout Bolivia - especially now as it rained about every day for the past 3 months and now all the clean water is mixed up even moreso with animal and human fecal matter! It is very tough on American bellies, but the Bolivian guts are much stronger than ours because they've been exposed since birth!
Thanks for all the hellos - I'm feeling somewhat better today so hopefully I just ate a little bit of something bad!
