I have been diagnosed with IBS about 4 years ago. Over this time i have tried several foods to help control the symptoms. The following have helped significantly:

- Start of day is fresh fruit juice squeezed from Grapefruit ( has high soluble fiber + other benefits, if you are use any medicines please research drug interactions with your doctor )

- 20 minute brisk walking on treadmill

- moderate sized meals, meals always start with mash potato or carrot

- Squeeze lemon juice ( or lime juice ) on meals. must

- Avoid all carbonated drinks ( probably caused all of my issues to start with). this is a must ( coke , pepsi etc )

- Avoid all artifical sweetenrs. My worst day is if i drink diet pepsi or coke.

- Avoid beer

- Avoid all preservative foods ( very important)

- Avoid coconut products such as co**** milk or any candy that contains coconut

- Avoid all coffee

- eat regularly , do not skip or delay a meal

- avoid milk products

By following the above , my life has changed significantly; Grapefruit juice + lemon juice in meals seems to have a huge impact. I have been doing this for 3 months now and feel a huge confidence boost. I still occassionally get diahrrea ( say once in 3 -4 weeks) but mostly beacuse i had to skip a meal or eat very late.

I have not given up on some fun things i love:

once or twice a month i have scotch ( black label or glenfiddich) ,

- Read up on alkaline vs acidic foods; I went down that path since i had nothing to loose.

gas, constipation, bloating have disaappeared literally ( Grape fruit juice in the morning + fresh lemon juice sqeezed on al meals)

Try it , hopefully it will work; you will see a difference within 2 -3 days; Have been using for a 3 months now and if i occassionally skip the grapefruit or lemon , no issues.

Hi pleasefixibs, Welcome to Healing Well :)

I'm glad you found something that works for you. I have to say that after years and finally finding the regimen that works for me, I felt so good. Unfortunately that means giving up some of the good stuff that isn't so good for us. It looks like you really have discipline and I applaud you for that. Looking forward to your posts :)

I have read you should start a meal with soluable fiber, guess carrot would fit that, maybe potato. That may be the key.

That's great!!!

Just a warning for those who are unaware...grapefruits (and GF juices) have severe interactions with RX, especially high cholesterol pills, which are sometimes used as a cross-over drug for IBSers to help with symptoms of their IBS...so keep this in mind if you're on any RX, make sure to find out if there is any interactions before you indulge in any GF.

Also, just be careful if you have any upper abdominal symptoms...acidic juices like grapefruit or orange juice can be particularly irritating for the esophagus and stomach.

Also, Xanax and that class of drugs have a label on them about grapefruit. I have never really know if that means you can have it other times though. I would not be taking it with my Xanax which I take at night. My guess is that possibly antidepressants may have a warning though not sure. For some reason other citrus doesnt. It is unique to grapefruit. Wonder how they even figured that out.
