Hi, I've recently been told I have IBS as I have had diarrhea, gases, abdominal pains almost every week for the past 2 months and doing my best to dig myself out of this hole. At the moment I feel weak and have lost a lot of weight, and my symptons are gases and abnormal stools, I go about twice a day,  it seems everytime I eat I get more gases and feel the need to go to the toilet. Today I have been eating, boiled, zucchini an potates, yoghurt, banana , grilled fish, rice and papaya, and I'm taking buscopan and flora tablets for the intestine. I also take aloe vera in the morning. Is there anything I'm doing wrong or anything else I can do? Thanks sad

Hi inglesito,
Welcome to HealingWell! :-)
First off, aloe vera is a natural laxative. DO NOT take it if you already have D.
Zucchini is great, but most "green" veggies add to gas and bloating. Zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, spinach, salad, peppers, onions, garlic... ALL cause gas. If you can cook those down really well, to where they're mushy, they might not be so bad for gas.
Papaya is 1 of the top 3 fruits nutrition wise. It is 1 of the few fruits with a natural digestive aide. I'd say keep that one up.
Bananas are known for helping D so I would keep eating that too.
Yogurt has probiotics which helps your gut flora so I say keep that up too.
Fish, potatoes and rice are healthy and pretty plain so I doubt they are addiding too much to your discomfort.
Have you been tested for Celiac's or for bacterial overgrowth? Are you lactose intolerant?
Are the flora tablets you are talking about probiotics? If so, and you've been keeping them up for more than a few weeks, you might want to switch brands/types. I noticed I can't take Acidophilus. It makes me way too gassy and bloated. I switched to Kyo-Dophilus and Culturelle and noticed a drastic difference. Maybe what you are taking just doesn't work for you.
Hopefully others will be around soon to share their ideas.

Hi 7Lil,

thanks for your reply, much appreciated! Ah ok I'll stop taking zucchini and aloe vera then! As for the flora tablets, they're called Ultra-Levura Saccharomyces boulardi 56,5mg, Excipients:Sacarosa:92,3 mg. My cousin recommended them so I'm not really sure if they are probiotics. Also I'm in Spain so maybe this brand won't be familar with you. How do I find out if I have Celiac's, bacterial overgrowth and if I'm lactose intolerant? Would you recomend Kyo-Dophilus and Culturelle or should I ask doctor before buying this?

Thanks for your help!

I looked up Ultra-Levura and it is a probiotic.  However, I don't know what Excipients:Sacarosa is... that rendered no search results I could make sense of (everything in spanish and confusing).  How long have you been taking Ultra-L?

The best way to test for Celiac's is to have an EGD done (upper endoscopy).  The doc would take a biopsy of your small bowel and see if your villi are damaged.  Or, some docs decide to test via blood test... they look for the antibody.  You could aslo try a totally gluten free diet and see if that helps you.  Here's a good link about Celiac's: http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/celiac/index.htm

Most people know if they're lactose intolerant... Can you drink a glass of milk with no problems?  Is anyone in your family lactose intolerant?  A doc can test you by giving you a liquid that contains lactose and then testing your blood afterwards.  If you are lactose intolerant your glucose levels will NOT go up, if you can digest lactose then your levels will be elevated.  Here is a good link about Lactose Intolerance:  http://digestive.niddk.nih.gov/ddiseases/pubs/lactoseintolerance/

Bacterial overgrowth is usually tested via a breath test.  Your doc will give you a solotution to drink and then s/he will test your breath for high levels of hydrogen and methane.  If you do have bacterial overgrowth then you would have to get on antibiotics.  Here is a good link about bacterial overgrowth:  http://www.medicinenet.com/small_intestinal_bacterial_overgrowth/article.htm

Something else to consider is H. Pylori.  It's similar to a bacterial overgrowth.  There are 3 ways to diagnose: endoscopy w/biopsy, breath test (looking for carbon dioxide), blood test (antibodies).  H. Pylori can be serious because it can cause ulcers and if untreated can cause cancer (stomach or lymphoma).  Treatment is a combination of antibiotics.  Here is a good link about H. Pylori:  http://www.medicinenet.com/helicobacter_pylori/article.htm

Sorry, I know this is a lot of information.  You should really see a doc and talk about your symptoms.  You could have "just IBS" or it could be a number of other things.  Testing is key.

I think I have been tested for celiac, I'll ask about the others. I have been taking ultra-levura for about 2 weeks now. My specialist only recomended me taking those danone yoghurts so I'm unsure as to whether I should take anything else. Could I try Kyo-Dophilus and Culturelle?

Oh ya, you could try any probiotic out there. They will not harm you. The best part is, you cannot overdose. I take 1 Kyo-Dophilus and 1 Culturelle pill a day, on top of 1 Dannon Activia. The only thing that may happen is excess gas in the beginning. If the gas doesn't subside after 2 weeks of continued use then I would switch to another probiotic. That's how I landed on the 2 that I take.

Hey 7lil,

Are you a digestive specialist yourself? It's just getting help from these forums is all well and good but how do I know it's a reliable source? In any case I am very grateful for your help and advice. Also can you recommend anything else apart from grilled fish/chicken. Potatoes, carrots, bananas, rice. I´m sick of eating this diet all the time and I seem to be losing a lot of weight.

Cheers!

Hi inglesito,
No, I am not a digestive specialist.  I only speak from my own experience and observations.  In fact, most (if not all) our members only speak from personal experience.  HealingWell does not encourage doctor postings.  I will quote what I wrote in another recent post:

"I'd like to add that this site/forum is for regular people to show support and share tips & ideas to managing their disease/disorder.  We do not have doctors on the site, nor do we encourage medically trained individuals to diagnose or help treat members.  Anyone looking for a diagnosis or medical advice should see their doctor.  Please see Rule #4 of the Forum Rules:
4. Use good judgement.  NEVER rely on information or opinions exchanged via the forums or chat rooms to replace necessary, personal consultation(s) with qualified health or medical professionals to meet your individual health or medical needs.  Remember that what's right or has worked for one person may not be what's right for you."

You do not have to believe what we say, only know that we are here to help each other.  We share our experiences and what works for us.  However, what works for one person may not work for another.

As for other foods... I do really well with pork.  I bread and bake pork chops and they come out really juicy.  I make rice or mashed potatoes with WELL cooked vegetables (zuccini, peas, corn, grean beens).  I also do well with pasta.  I make a sauce out of chicken pieces, fake butter, Marsala wine, and vegetables (artichokes, green beans, tomatoes 'chopped fine', water chestnuts, black olives, & zuccini).  It's all really healthy, easy on my gut, and pretty quick to cook.  They preserve pretty well too.

thanks 7Lil I will bear that in mind. Don't think I mentioned but I'm a 25 year old male FYI, and I really think my problem is down to stress and I am seriously considering taking a period off work to relax. I've been given a list of things to try :
From specialist:
Entere-silicona- to eliminate gases ( seems to help, but this morning I thought I was going to break wind and a poop shot out!)
Plantaben-To give more substance to your stools, acts as a regulator of evacuations.
Duspatilin
From Nutrion shop:
Lythrum complex- Droplets to increase consistency in stools and avoid an excessive amount of liquid in them.
Clay
Bifid-lax - probiotics

Has anybody used any of these?
