I was taking Zelnorm, which was working like a dream, well since they have discontinued it I have been on the Azitiza.  I have went back to that nasty bloated feeling and the pains.  IS there anyone out there who had been on the Zelnorm and is now taking something else that is working well for them with these symptoms.  I loved the way that my bloatiness went away with the Zelnorm, and I hate so much how it is back!

With the same problem lifelong, I had tried Zelnorm and it did help (with some problems "of its own".  Disabled and without drug coverage insurance (before the Medicare "prescription drug company benefit") I could not continue it.

Let me tell you what I've done w/o prescription drugs since.

(From another recent post of mine)
_______
My MIRACLE aid (#1) for IBS came when Miralax came out (PEG 3350).   It is not a "laxative", really ... it's a water soluable plastic that is not absorbed by the body, but which itself hangs onto water.  My system tends to completely dessicate (dry out) itself "overnight (sleep)" and especially the contents of the gut.  I have been known to eliminate a gallon of liquid while sleeping ... or rather trying (but missing half of it getting up).  This was partially caused by iron deficiency apparently.

Miralax alone was a help when constipated, but with variable results, but MUCH better when I tried mixing HALF a dose (about 8 gm) in 10  oz. water with 1/2 teaspoonful of sugarless, orange flavored "Metamucil" and stirring for 5 minutes before drinking (once a day as needed, or twice in "bad times").  REALLY gives me some control over symptoms reliably for first time.  Try this for IBS control of especially constipation and that HORRIBLE boating.  Miralax is now OTC, but generic prescription is 1/2 the cost (Glycolax, etc.)  In 3 years the generics will be OTC too.  You may also want to try 1/3 dose in "wet" oatmeal (I have to over-wet my food) made 3:1 water/oats.

I tried this because the old standby Metamucil always made me much worse because my body just drags all the water out of it and turns it to concrete.  The Miralax mixed with it, even at those low doses, seems to combat this, and the oatmeal works that way too (that is, my body needs soluable and insoluable fiber that it CAN'T dry out ... for me a nearly impossible order).
_______

My most recent discovery is that two bowls of "wet" oatmeal per day (3:1 ratio water : oats)  is very helpful ... one bowl/day wasn't.   If needed (worse periods) I put a 1/3 dose of "Miralax" in the oatmeal.  After 40 years of problems (and trying prescriptions and huge doses of natural and artificial fiber that never worked) I think I finally have a handle on the problem ... I need to fight the tendency for dryness in the gut with Miralax (during "trouble periods") and a lot of very specific wet fiber ("wet" oatmeal) ... one bowl per day didn't do a lot, two helps.

Of course you may have a different set of overall conditions (IBS does not seem to be "one" disorder, but a spectrum of them).  However, if the tendency for extreme dryness in the gut seems to fit at all, the things I'm suggesting are certainly very benign to try.  Indeed if you can keep the gut working right with lots of the right kind of fiber it seems to really help.  That doesn't mean you won't have difficult times (the time for Miralax).  I hope it doesn't take 40 years for you to find the right combination.  We'll try to keep that from happening.  Good luck.

Thank you!  You have talked me into trying Miralax, I have been very doubtful with it, because none of the others have worked.  They seem to just make my belly grumble and bloat more.  I will also try the oatmeal, very wet. I have tried oatmeal but just the normal.  I have also tried Lentils and fruits and everything. And have no success in going to the bathroom, so with in time (2-3 weeks) I can't handle it anymore and rely on a laxative. Thanks again!

Hi unconsc... yeah

Thank you for sharing your history of IBS-C and your successful approch in trying to get a handle on it.  Like you, I also am a life-long sufferer from constipation and have tried all sort of things.  The problem is still not solved.  I am  going to try Miralax with wet oatmeal and with metamucil and, shortly, I will report back the results.  I am hoping that it works for me, too.

Thank you, again.

I also thank you for sharing..and am learning a lot here.  I too have low ferritin level (iron) and have had  long standing constipation that has suddenly become much much worse since my entry into menopause (dang hormone fluctuations) LOL. I didn't fully realize how constipated i really was getting...thought i was putting on tummy weight, I was really IMPACTED m altho i was having small BM's, i was getting nauseated and things were backing up slowly over a period of a month. I strained and the hormone levels (and big babies with a vaginal wall weakness from a big baby and a vaginal tear) caused me to prlapse my uterus and  bladder...:(  I too seem to dry up so easily and now its soooo much worse. Docs say 'you're just constipated...take fiber'....but high fiber foods make me SICKER!!!!!! Why do docs not seem to understand??? My PCP did give me Reglan, which has at least makes me less nauseated so i can eat a little and not bloat up like I'm ready to delivera 10 # babe. this is overwhelming to say the least and the thought of surgery to pull up my pelvic organs is daunting, if its related, plus my GYN says i need my C under control or she cannot do it. Not sure how much of this is related to a bad GI bug I had last summer, bronchitis and antibiotics following, or combination of factors including some meds I've been on.(Xanax, Vitamins with iron and Calcium and Vitamin D)Sheesh.

thank you for this excellent site and i hope to get to know some of you here who have been living with this and can offer advice.

Welcome to HW, Mattsmom!!! :-)

Did your C problem start last summer? If so, your combination of meds (and being sick) could possibly be your culprit. Did you take probiotics? Do you take them now? How about eat yogurt? Dannon Activia really lives up to their advertising - that it will get your GI tact moving in 2 weeks.
What about taking Miralax? It is an osmodic laxative that has been proven safe for frequent use.

Hi 7Lil..thanks for the welcome! :) I've been somewhat constipated since childhood really...self diagnosed IBS c which has worsened thru adult years altho I have had episodes where it was under control.  I remember  my Mom forcefeeding me prunejuice as a babe. LOL!!! but it really kicked in gear since I've gone into 'mentalpause' LOL...you're right and this sudden worsening of a lifelong problem is probably a combination of things all recently ganging up on me, stress, infections, antibiotics, hormones, vitamins with calcium, etc..

As to your questions, yes, I've been eating  Activia and the Prebiotic Cereals...I was on antibiotics last spring and ate Organic live culture yogurt for weeks following. But the yogurt/milk products seem to stop me up more(always have) so I have to be careful with them.

I've tried the cooked veggie/ fruits/AllBran and and get too gassy/bloated/pained. Now I'm trying Citrucel. Next step: Miralax and the wet oatmeal with only a tiny bit of Metamucil trick above as I think Urconscience speaking and I have very similar  'dry' guts that will not hang onto water.

Sure do appreciate the support and good info here and it is frustrating our docs do not seem to care enough to provide this! :(

Be well all and thanks again.

How much calcium are you taking, Deb? Calcium has a side effect of constipation. I know calcium is a must for women, especially when menopausal, but maybe you could talk to your doc about how it constipates you further. There must be something you can take to ****er the effects.
Hang in there!

Hi 7Lil thanks for your reply!. I just stopped my vitamins and 'extra' supplements for now...til I know what aggravated this episode??! I just flat out asked my PCP for a referral to a gastro in the area as I am past my time for my colonoscopy per my last GI visit in my last locale (we've relocated)Since my gyn is talking surgery I want to talk with one before hand since my last scope showed diverticulum and adhesions.

Per your question: I was taking a a very good, enzymatic, organic womens vitamin that had 800 mg CA phos. I was also trying: glucosamine sulfate for knee arthritis . I also take Xanax for panic which I've reduced as I know this slows my bowel further (this is a hard road) I have a sleep disorder following a brain injury so must take a small dose of Valium 2.5 mg and Lunesta 6 mg. All these meds plus my low thyroid possibly contributeto my already slow bowel!!! Good news: the Citrucel is not as harsh on my GI tract as the other fiber supps and All bran ( horrid w/ pain, trapped gas )and is helping somewhat) but I may need to go to the Miralax if I add back vitamins for my health.

Is anyone here on Miralax and major meds such as seizure meds and can advise me of best times to take these so they are absorbed properly in my system and don't get 'lost' in any Miralax effect(if any)?

Thanks so very much! :)
