Hello

I'm relatively new but I have to say thanks to all for this site. It has already relieved my mind about a lot of my symptoms.

Recently I was officially diagnosed with IBS (D dominant). Ten years ago I was told by a doctor that I "probably have IBS" but at that time it seemed that he was implying it was all due to stress and I just needed to calm down. If only!

Today I was given a prescription for Bentyl (10 mg 2x times a day). Lately between my neck/back pain and my female issues I feel that I am a guinea pig for drugs...."hey try this, see how it works" .....After suffering horrific side effects from a drug prescribed for my fibroids, I am hoping to get some feedback from some of you about taking Bentyl. The doctor seemed most focused on my cramping, and I was wondering if any of you have ever used this drug. How were the side effects? Was it effective for your symptoms?

Thanks in advance.
I have 2 herniated cervical discs, a digestive system that seems to hate me, fibroids and a bad knee, but I'm also lucky enough to have a sweet husband and 4 loving cats that help me through it all.

Hi goddess,
I do not take Bentyl but my girlfriend does. The only side effect she has is drowsiness. She has to make sure to take it when she is staying home (no driving).
Hopefully others will be around with their input too. Good luck with it! If it doesn't work you might want to ask your doc for another antispasmodic, there are quite a few on the market these days.

Thank you 7Lil!

I'm a little hesitant to take any medication after what happened with Effexor (for my fibroids)

The sleepiness may be good for me since I frequently have trouble sleeping. I'm going to start taking it tomorrow.

So glad I found this site! It has helped me immensely already!

I don't take Bentyl however I do take another anitspasmodic that works the same way. I am so glad that I have it. I don't take it everyday but only as needed and its a great "insurance" to have in case I get these bad cramps doubling me over. Bentyl has been around for a long time and the only bad thing I have heard about it is the increased drowsiness (as Lil stated) however it seems like in your case, this is a welcome. :-)

I've been taking bentyl now for about 3-4 weeks.  So far, I think it's wonderful.  It helps not with just abdominal cramping, but also bladder cramping, and stomach cramping (all of which I have).  It's almost like a muscle relaxer or the equivalent.  The only thing I would recommend is to take it at night at first to see how it makes you feel.  It doesn't cause me any side effects at all, so I can take it any time of the day.  If you don't like the way it makes you feel, you have complete control over whether to take it again.

Best of luck to you!

I took Bentyl (dicyclomine) back in the day.  I don't remember any side effects from it whatsoever!  At one point I tried hyoscyamine, which I didn't like as much because it gave me dry mouth.  This supposedly can occur with Bentyl but it probably wouldn't be bothersome enough to stop taking the drug.  I hope it works for you!
