Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone could help me!

Recently I was diagnosed with IBS after having embarrasing, annoying rumbles in my stomach.  How embarrassing!

The doctors, unfortunatly, found no way to treat it: so im on my own.  This problem is getting in the way of my studies, making me livid.  I find it really difficult to focus on anything else when my tummy is in full explosion mode!  Not to mention I get a few odd stares across the classroom! :S

Does anyone have any short or long term solutions I could try?

Thanks

Hi Amy, Welcome to Healing Well :-)

Yes, the dreaded rumblings. I wish I could tell you how to get rid of it completely. Some people have noisier digestion than others and it tends to affect people with IBS more. My suggestion on how to minimize it is to maybe take something for gas like Gas-X which should neutralize a lot of the gas. If there is air in your intestines, it does tend to become louder as you digest. Also fiber does help as well but remember fiber can cause increased gas when you first start taking it, and always best to start off slow. I'm sure you will get more replies and suggestions.

You're not eating any surgar-free products, are you? That includes sugar-free gum and mints. Sugar alcohols in products like that can cause a lot of loud stomach rumbles in people.

Do you get less stomach rumbles when you eat? You might try nibbling all day instead of eating three big meals; that helps a lot of people with bowel problems because their system doesn't react with shock when they put something into it after it's been turned off for a little while.

No I eat products with sugar, so thats not the problem!  And the problem actually worsens when I eat - Its very stressful.

Thanks for the advice on the nibbling foods - It has been recommended to me before - so I think I might give it a go!

Thank you for your help.

I don't know if you do caffine, but that's a stimulant, so that might be over-stilmulating your digestive tract. I do wonder, though, if there's something that you're eating that your stomach is just not in the mood to tolerate, and so it's complaining? You mention consuming sugar (which, honestly, most people do). Some people have difficulty digesting sugar and find that if they give up table sugars and even things like honey, they have less problem. Some people also find that going totally low-carb helps their digestion. You might just try and play around with an elimination diet to see if you can identify a food that's making your guts make the noise. Sugar, caffiene, carbs, and artifical sweetners are the first ones I'd try, but dairy and gluten are two others to try. Just try eliminating one thing at a time to see if you get any better. If you get a little bit better, then go ahead and eliminiate another something--you may have two things that are bothering you.
