I have suffered with IBS since I was 14. I have seen a gastro doctor and he diagnosed me, by performing a simple colonoscopy. He gave me strict diet instructions and since then I have followed to the best way I can. I am 21 now, but over the last few weeks I have experienced alot of pain with my IBS. It has gone so far as that every time I eat something, I cannot keep it in my stomach for long. I have never had this problem before. I eat all the right foods and take an IBS Supplement, but it still seems to have no effect. I take immodium religiously which can become quite annoying having tablets every day, and I assume that they aren't much good for the other parts of the body as well. So I am beyond frustration with my IBS and it can sometimes be hard to tolerate and control. I have been to a doctor lately who has made me have a Abdominal X-ray and stool samples to make sure it is nothing serious. So, even though I haven't had IBS that long, I pretty much have missed out on alot of things because of it. To make matters worse I also suffer from Chronic Cystitis, so that really doesn't help the situation.
If anyone has any suggestions far from taking any more tablets regarding IBS, I would love to hear it.
Thanks for having a look at my post :)

Hey painful, sorry to hear you're having such a rough time...but welcome to the site, there's a lot of knowledgeable people here and we will inundate you with advice!

I have a few questions: 1) Have you ever had an upper scope (EGD - in which the scope is placed down your esophagus into your stomach) with biopsies?  2) Have you had any blood work done recently?  3) How many times a day do you typically have diarrhea if you do not take Immodium?  4) Is your stomach pain in one particular spot, or diffuse?  5) What kind of IBS supplement do you take?  6) What kind of dietary restrictions were you given?

I have a lot more questions but this'll get you started!  There are lots of things that can help with diarrhea (including taking a calcium citrate supplement, fiber supplements, probiotics, and many others) - I too suffer with diarrhea constantly so I have tried a lot of these, but people get relief from different things, so it's important to see a better picture of what your IBS is like.  Again, welcome.

Hi painfully,

I don't have anything else from what Sarita posted. I'll be interested to find out also. I just wanted to add my welcome to you to Healing Well :-)

Hey there Sarita,

To answer your questions

1) I have never had an upperscope before, but I will definately look into it!
2)I had a blood test done recently but that's it to do with blood so far.
3) I have the diarrhea at least 5-7 times per day without the immodium
4)The pain in my stomach can very, must it is mainly on the left hand side, sharp, long bouts of pain, then a horrible gluggy feeling
5)I take an australian brand namesd IBS supplement from a company called Blackmores which I am unsure if it's a probiotic or not
6) The dietary requirements were these:
*No cheese
*No spicy foods (eg chilli's, onions, tomatos)
*No Chocolate
*No red wine

Pretty much unless it is bland food, I am not allowed to have it.
I hope this has helped. Thank you for writing back so fast, it feels good to be able to talk about it.

Hmm.  This could be a flare-up of your IBS...but how much more intense is the pain from what you're used to?  Did your abdominal x-ray should anything abnormal?  Was it a barium x-ray (did you have to drink the chalky white stuff)?

You should see if you can get your hands on a copy of your blood test results, as well as your abdominal x-ray and stool test results.  Do you have a follow-up appointment with your doctor scheduled?  The upper endoscopy and/or a CT scan of your abdomen would be the likely next step if your symptoms don't improve.  In the meantime, to help your diarrhea, you might want to try one (or more) of the following "Most Popular Remedies for Chronic Diarrhea," brought to you by the lovely ladies of this forum (hey, girls, we should write a book)!

1) Calcium citrate supplements.  May help soothe your tummy and firm up your poo.  Also good for the bones - bonus!

2) A helping of yogurt with live cultures, such as L. acidophilus, each morning - helps replenish your digestive system with "good" bacteria.

3) Slowly adding a fiber supplement to your daily routine (start too fast and it can make you blow up like a balloon - start off easy and then work your way up from there).

There are more, but again, these should get you started!
