Hey,

I'm back after summer break.  So today was supposed to be my first day of school and I was excited b/c its my senior year and everything! I took my amitiza and fibercon last night and was thinking that would help me for in the morning! and it didnt!  I woke up felt like I had to use the bathroom but when i went to sit down on the toilet it was mainly gas and i felt like i had to go so i would move around and push and stuff but nothing would really come out and so i was like I dont feel like going through another school year like this !  It would be best if i just got a homebound teacher again and took all sorts of medicines to get this right! so i can go to a nice college or go on the school trip to France this year!

But when I told my mom she was telling me that I should just go and try and I explained everything to her and she finally just snapped and told me to go to my room and she didnt want to see me!

So i went to my room ... and she came in later and told me that I should be able to make it to school by 8 which would have been an hour ...and it was just after i told her i wouldnt be able to make it and stuff !  and then before closing my door she told me she just didnt think i was trying!!!

I think that out of anyone in my family she should know how hard I have been trying I have been dealing with stomach pains and stuff since 5th grade!!! I have missed a bunch of school b/c of it and all the times i told her i couldnt go to school and she told me to go that was me trying !  when i went homebound last year and came back although it was for a week before goin back homebound that was still me trying!

I dont know maybe I am just being a wimp about this..

Welcome back, nst...I'm sorry to hear you are having a rough go of it on your first day of school.  Can I ask if your symptoms became worse just recently, or have you felt this way the entire summer?  Are you in pain, or is it more of a feeling like you just can't "go?" Did you make it to school today?

I think your mother feels your frustration, and is also frustrated in that it's difficult to know how to make you feel better.  It sounds like she is concerned about your education and wants you to be able to accomplish those wonderful goals you have (going to college, visiting France); but she knows that in order for you to do those things, keeping up with your schooling is necessary.

Whatever happened with homebound tutoring last year?  Did it work out better?  Do you have a counselor at your school that you could make an appointment with and talk about your concerns?  Have you seen your doctor lately?  I don't remember what medications you've tried but I know there's help out there for you.

Don't give up, even when you've had such a rough day - there are steps you can take to relieve your symptoms and enjoy your senior year!

Could you work something out with school so that maybe you take some classes at school and some at home, or go to each class once a week at school and take the rest of them at home? That would help you have some social life and feel like you are part of school, without having you there so many hours that you feel that you can't get time free to go try to have a bowel movement.

To me trying too much/too hard makes things worse. If I try for a bit and can't get anything to come out, I take a laxative and wait until I think it's had time enough to work and that when I try this time it will come out. I seem to recall my mother saying that trying, but not succeeding, can make the situation worse; something about working those muscles around the stool make it that much harder.

Hi nst,

I'm sorry that you are going through all of this. I remember being your age and having to deal with my IBS issues. It was the worse. I had IBS-D at the time and all though I hid it well (only my teachers and close friends knew), it was a horrible way to live at that age. My options were limited too and although my mother knew I suffered, she also pushed me with school. It was hard but I made it through. Do you think that your symptoms got worse since you are starting school again? Sometimes anxiety will make your IBS worse. Your at an age where its very difficult to talk to your parents and I know that communication can be hard. Just try and see if you can sit down with your mom and seriously explain it. I wish I had better advice for you on this.

Yea I think it has gotten worse since school started b/c its my senior year and i was really excited to go! I have sat down with my mom and tried to talk to her but she keeps saying i should just quit school and that the school has already put me in study hall 1st period and im allowed to just leave the classrooms whenever i want to go to the bathroom ... but she should know that i dont use the bath room in public places unless its an emergency!

Last night my stomach was hurting really bad and when i tried to use the bathroom it would burn! Is this common I know i have felt this way before but everytime i had to use the bathroom it would burn

Burning makes me think of bile. If you have excess bile in your stool, you may have more going on than just IBS... quite possibly a gall bladder problem. I would definitely tell your mom to bring this symptom up to the doctor so he can be aware. I'm sure others here with GB issues will be able to give you more info. This is just a guess anyway since I personally have not had GB issues.

Stomach ulcers can cause a burning sensation in the stomach region too. You need to have them look for those.

Burning poop, on the other hand, is often a sign of a gall bladder problem. Also, if it is ever yellow or green. And while D is much more common with a bad GB, constipation is not entirely unheard of either. Your bile breaks down your food and a lack of it can cause constipation (although when GBs go bad, most people seem to have too much of it or have it come out at the wrong times, thus the D).

You can't see the gall bladder with a scope, you need a hida scan to determine problems with the gall bladder. You could possibly get by with an ultrasound if it is stones but that won't even help if its a malfunctioning gallbladder. A scope can though look for ulcers which looks like they have ruled those out.

Hey Nst....just a word of advice. people that do not understand IBS, or do not have it can never say that you aren't trying. There is a really good set of things people say. It is under top 10 stupid things people say to ibs sufferers. Check it out. It might be a good read for your mom. Peace and Love.
