Donnatal

Generic Name: belladonna alkaloids and phenobarbital Brand Names: Antispas, Antispasmodic, Barbidonna, Donnapine, Donnatal, Donnatal Extentabs, Elixiral, Hyosophen, Spasmolin

Phenobarbital is in a class of drugs called barbiturates. Phenobarbital depresses the activity of your brain and nervous system, causing relaxation.

Belladonna alkaloids produce many effects in the body, including relief from spasms of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach and intestines),

Both of these drugs have been around a long time. Be sure to get patient information from your physician and pharmacy. :)

I have some sitting here that I have never used even when I probably should have. I think the main thing you have to be concerned with is it making you sleepy and not to take it with any med like Xanax or sleeping pills especially in the beginning. There are people that can handle it more often but I think every 12 hours is the recommended dosage and don't take it if you have been drinking alcohol.

Donnatal is a terrific med that has been around awhile.   I use it & it's really good.  It's used in hospital ERs as part of the "GI cocktail" when patients present w nausea & vomiting & it's dx as gastro enteritis etc --the "GI Cocktail is Donnatal & Maalox---in a small paper cup.

In regards to IBS i just use occasionally--as i use Librax.

I used Donnatol long ago when this whole problem was referred to as nervous stomach and I remmember my gyno giving it for menstral cramps. As I recall it worked. I've taken Bentyl and Librax and not found either of them to be a great wonder drug at least for me. I have an appt with my gastro dr tomorrow and will ask him for the simple old fashioned Donnatol. I'm glad to hear it's helping you. I think both of the others make you constipated ( which becomes an additional problem) and tired. I'll let you know what he says. Merri
