I suffer from IBS for years. This morning I had an episode which was very painful and frightening. Sorry if I'm being gross but I will try and put it in the best words. Is it posible I'm eating too much fiber? When I went to have a bowel movement this morning I was on the bowl for approx 1 hr; the stool was too big too pass; so I will spare the details.  I do have a bm every morning but nothing like this. How do I avoid this from ever happening again. I do take hydrocodone which causes constipation but I've never had this problem. I have increased my fiber the past month. Any ideas what I can do; I've never had so much pain and discomfort before. I felt like being sick at the same time; just from pushing. I thought I would have to go to the hospital. Please give me your thoughts. Do I cut back on the fiber, the meds or both? Thank you for listening.

Unless you suddenly upped your dosage of fiber all of a sudden, this is probably not a problem with fiber. Everyone has natural periods of constipation (and D too), so if your stools go back to normal after this, then I would suspect it was just one of those fairly random things. If you continue to be constipated though, I would look at getting your doctor to try and cut the hydrocodone back a bit; it's most likely the culprit, I would think.

Also, sometimes what we eat can cause constipation. Bananas, especially the dehydrated kind, are something that's bad to give people constipation (among some other things).

Hi Kim!  A few years back I was diagnosed with a colon impaction.  Doc told me that folks who suffer with C should be very careful about taking fiber supplements, especiall OTC brand names which are full of psyllium husk.  Because I tend toward C, it's vital to keep my gut as hydrated and "liquid" as I can.  Fiber supplements work by bulking stool and extracting fluid from the colon to compact the fecal matter.  If you are already contipated, as I was, adding more and more fiber may simply dehydrate the colon to the point where nothing can pass easily.

Since you are taking a drug which constipates, you might want to consider introducing a stool softener into your regiment.  Of course, drink as much water as you possibly can.  Investigating the many different fiber supplements to find the one which works the safest is probably a good idea too!

Thank you both for the response. Yes, I did up my fiber because my doctor is always telling me "I need more fiber"; the past few days with the exception of this mornings episode I went to the bathroom 14 times; exhausting. The hydrocodone helps keep my out of the bathroom so I can work and have a somewhat normal life. I don't drink enough water. I know I need to modify my diet and I will! I didn't know there was a difference in fibers "soluble and Insoluble"; I've been having oatmeal, granola, raisin bran, etc; too much bad fiber I think. I was just so scared when that happened. It happened once before to but not this bad. I also have alot of cheese in my diet which is bad.   I'm going to educate myself as much as I can about the good and bads of the foods I put into my body along with educating myself about IBS!

Thank you both again so very much :)

It's never a good idea to over-load with fibre, if you're eating enough fibreous foods then you should not have to up your fibre supplements...cut back down on them and eat only enough fibreous foods, don't over-do it and drink plenty of water everyday to also help flush things out.

I just wanted to add my emphasis on the water. Water is extremely important with fiber. If you don't get enough water, the fiber will not work properly and you can have devastating results. Water is needed to help the stool pass and if it cannot pass, it will build up leading to compacted stool. Hope things get better for you.

Thank you for the replies. Today was much better :). I cut back on fiber, avoiding triggers like coffee, cheese.  My tummy felt good. Temptation is hard but I'm trying. I'm also never without a water bottle in my hand so I'm drinking more water.

I'm so happy there is a website for this condition; thanks again :)
