Hi there guys,
I'm desperate here.
I am 21, i suffered an eating disorder since 14, i am now alot better. I also suffer depression and anxiety disorders. baring this in mind please read my symptoms:
The last year or so i have been constipated, going once a month if i was lucky. Now for the last month i have had severe pain in my lower left side, nausia, fatigue, when i walk it hurts my bowel. The dr thinks it may be IBS. I have been given a tablet that should reduce the bloating. the spasms and the wind.
my frind took a picture of me when i wasnt looking the other day, i looked more pregnant than her and shes 5months gone!
I walk around with my tummy podged out due to the pain. Is this consistant to ibs in others experience?

Hi Betty,

Welcome to Healing Well :-)

Are you seeing a GI doctor? Severe pain in the lower left side makes me think of diverticulosis which can be caused by chronic constipation. Its something that I definitely think you need to get checked out even if just to rule out. Going once a month is definitely a severe case. What have you tried to alleviate this? There are options out there for severe constipation. I take Miralax which is a powder that I use once a day, this has helped me out tremendously. Also there is a fairly new rx on the market called Amitiza which is also for severe constipation. I would suggest not getting dependent on the classic stimulant laxatives as it can cause long term dependence also with your history of eating disorder its not a good idea. If you are seeing a PCP, then I would definitely suggest to you to see about getting a referral to a gastroenterologist who can give you some broader suggestions and to do the necessary testing if applicable. Once you can get your constipation under control, your bloating should get better as well.

Sorry Betty... A GI is a gastroenterologist (specialist in gastrointerology) and a PCP is a term used by insurance companies meaning primary care physician which is usually a family doctor, general practioner, or an internal medicine doctor.

I would try asking your regular doctor about a referral to see what he/she says, especially if what they are doing is not helping.

hi betty--

i had intense and painful bloating for several years, along with constipation.

i saw a lot of doctors and what no one told me was that it could be related to muscles spasms. for me a big part of the bloating and pain was intestinal spasms. i also found out i had hypothyroidism which can cause constipation.

this is what helped me with those symptoms, doing everything at once:

soluble fiber supplement like citrucel (insoluble fiber supplements made me a lot worse)
regular practice of yogic breathing exercise to relax and bring blood flow to my abdomen
treatment for hypothyroid, both T4 and T3 (most docs just treat the T4, but the T3 is equally as important)
an SSRI
triphala, an ayurvedic herbal compound, you can get it at a health food store

just my .02 but these things together reduced my symptoms about 80%.
