Well I had another diverticulitis attack despite just coming off of abx treatment for the last one (that's two in a couple of weeks span - maybe didn't get the first one completely).  I ended up in the ER Friday night so I'm on more abx now (Flagyl & Levaquin) and I see my doctor today for a follow up.  I was so scared that I would need surgery but now I am welcoming the idea because it seems like no matter how good I try to take care of myself, there is no guarantee and the risk of abcess or perforation is so real and scary with each attack.

Well I won't bore you with the details but I did want to explain why I wasn't here all weekend and apologize for "abandoning" you guys.

CHICA!  I'm so sorry that happened!  I hope the powerful combo knocks it out this time.  You poor thing.  Make sure you keep up with the probiotics.  How did the doctor's visit go?

Thanks Sarita. I went to my dr today and he did a hemoccult and detected blood so he ordered a CT scan for tomorrow. I went and picked up my two yucky bottles of barium at the hospital to drink tomorrow morning... UGH!! I got one banana and one berry, I'm thinking that if I get one down at least I will have a bit of a change when drinking the other LOL. The pain got really bad when I got home so I took a hydrocodone about an hour and a half ago and I'm still having some break thru pain so thinking about taking another.

Sorry for whining... thanks for the reply... I'll let you know how it goes and what I hear from my results.

My dearest Des, please know you are in my thoughts.  I remember the last couple years you mentioning that if you have another attack your doc would want you to have surgery... now you've had 2 attacks!  Surgery never sounds like a good thing, but maybe it is in this case.  You just need to get better no matter what it takes.

Des, please keep us posted.  Sending you lots of hugs and support... you are always in my thoughts.

((((((hugs)))))))

Thanks Lil and Indersonu,

You guys are the best... thank you for the support (as always :-) )

If I have to do the surgery while I'm in this flare, more than likely it will be the two step and I would need a temp colostomy so I'm hoping to avoid it at this stage. When I'm well which hopefully I can get there without emergency surgery, I will definitely be getting a consult and more than likely I can get a resection in that first surgery.

I'm almost half way through this barium (it really isn't that bad but not wonderful either, just a lot to drink) and I will be leaving for my scan in about an hour. Thanks for all of your thoughts.

I'll let you know how it goes

Take Care

It's like I tell some people with gall bladder pains: if you're not begging for surgery, it's not bad enough yet!

Sounds like you are getting to that point, though. I figure, if you let yourself reach bottom, surgery can only be an improvement!

You are so right Keri, my husband had his gallbladder out on his birthday because that was the soonest that they could schedule it. He wasn't going to wait any longer and he said that it was a great birthday present.

My doctor's nurse called me yesterday and my CT results came back and there were no abnormalities noted. Not EVEN diverticulitis. Good news I guess but I don't know what's going on with me at all and all signs of inflammation or infection or anything like that is normal. Not sure now why there was blood in my stool or why my WBC count is elevated but scan was normal. My GI said that he was sending the results to my PCP but I'm not sure what he will be able to do for me since on paper, I'm okay.

The worse part is that I'm still having the pains that mostly come in the evenings and sometimes they are so severe. Since the CT scan (which should show up something if something was wrong) was normal, I don't know where to turn.

Have you had a stool test recently? C. difficile is getting out of hand, and it can cause symptoms like yours.
