Hi, I have a question about Glomerular Filtration Rate.  Mine was 48, the range given was 60 - 128.  How worried should I be?  My BUN  was 17 and my Creat was 1.20 from the same blood draw.  I am a 49 year old female.  Thanks, KO

Hey KO! Welcome to the Kidney Forum of HW!!! Sorry you are having some problems with your Kidneys. Your GFR is probably a little higher than what is listed on the lab papers. My nephrologist told me that is just an estimation. When the lab paper said it was 46, when he added in the info about me it would be around 60 %. So I think a lot of it has to do with your age, weight and things like that. Your creatine is within the normal limits. It is a high normal but I was told it should be .6-1.2 so you are right at the border. The BUN (blood urea nitrogen is also within normal limits. I think the range is usually 6-20.

Could you have been stressed, dehydrated, or had an excessive amount of protien. I know these factors can cause your BUN and Creatine to go up. I wouldnt be too worried about it right now, it tend to vary depending on what is happening in your life. Did your doctor seem to worried about it? Are you being referred to nephrologist? Maybe you can arrange to have a complete urinalysis and a Basic Metabolic Panel and see if anything changes. Keep us posted??? Hope things improve for ya :)

Hi Amy,
I actually was reading an article about Aspartame lowering kidney function and it made a reference to GFR.  I remembered that the Lyme doctor I had a consultation with had ordered one.  I checked through my many pages of lab results and noticed the results.  I did some research to see what I could find out.   I plan on bringing the lab results when I have my yearly pap/mamo next month, I just wanted to see if I should look into this further with a specialist, or if my gyne would know enough to either refer me, or run more test.  Thanks, KO

Oh yes, the lovely aspartame subject. I have heard so many bad things about aspartame. I would not be suprised if that is causing the problems. I have a feeling if it serious enough your gyne would deffinatly refer you to a specialist if needed. Let us know what you decide! I wish you luck !!!
